Product Description

Review

'Lester Brown is one of the pioneers and heroes of global environmentalism. If the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize had been extended to a third recipient, the logical candidate would have been Lester Brown.' - E. O. Wilson

'This is the ultimate survival guide for our species. Lester Brown plots a path around and beyond the looming environmental abyss with courage, compassion and immense wisdom.' - Jonathan Watts, Asia Environment Correspondent for The Guardian and author of When A Billion Chinese Jump

'World on the Edge is brilliant. Author Lester Brown is one of humanity's greatest voices for the environment. In this volume, he presents the reader with a clear prescription for restoring sanity to our relationship with the biosphere. Highest recommendation.' - Geoffrey Holland, Author, The Hydrogen Age

'No one is better informed than Lester Brown of the multi-faceted crisis facing our planet. And no one has spelt out so clearly how our civilisation could be saved from falling 'over the edge' while there is - hopefully - still just time.'- John Rowley, founder/editor www.peopleandplanet.net

'Lester Brown has produced another 'planetary survey' book that tells us how to get off the wrecking train we are on by courtesy of a dozen environmental assaults such as climate change. The better news (and there's plenty) is that turning problems into opportunities generally puts money into our pockets.' -Norman Myers, 21st Century School, University of Oxford

'World on Edge details the vice closing around us: a quadruple squeeze of global warming and shortages in food, water and energy. Then it explains the path out - and how little time we have left to take that path. Got anything more important to read than that?' -Peter Goldmark, former head of the Port authority of New York and New Jersey, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, and CEO of the International Herald Tribune

'Brown's comprehensive review of human civilization's impending crises never becomes overwhelming, as it is accompanied by clear-eyed, pragmatic solutions that constitute a road map to a cleaner, more just world.'-David Roberts, senior staff writer, grist.org

'This is a thought provoking book which presents macro-issues and macro-solutions. It is without a doubt a vitally important read which graphically present just what humankind has done to the habitats it has colonised and exploited.' - Eagle Bulletin

About the Author

This is a serious and thoughtful contribution from someone who has devoted a lifetime to trying to make the world a better place. I think some of his scenarios are a bit gloom laden but he is making a point. And he has good data to back him up. Read it and think. He deserves to be heard. His writing is clear, his sources are well referenced, and his arguments are well made. This is an important book on a topic that affects us all.

As the other reviewers note, World on the Edge is at its core an updated and hence even more strident version of Brown's brilliant Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization.

I won't bore you with another long review, but instead refer you to my detailed review of Plan B here to understand what this is all about: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R17SNL7VUPNX48/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

I will close this review in the same vein as my Plan B review though:

"I cannot recommend this book highly enough - read it - get your kids to read it - get your parents to read it - give it to your neighbours. What are you waiting for? It's free! Go to the EarthPolicy.org Website and download the PDF - get the presentation and all the other stuff that goes with the book while you're there."

its such a chilling yet readable account of the way we have changed the world we rely upon. while the planet will survive anything we do it is us that will struggle to survive. This is a massive wake up call to all those in politics to unite at all costs as if this was a world war. It is the only way to view it as a World War where its the world population that is at risk. The rich continue to get richer and the poor poorer. Will that ever change?

This is a very good book if you are a climate change virgin or an ignorant polititian, for me as a dedicated doom watcher there was little new except the idea of replacing income tax with a total cost carbon tax; a great idea but I doubt if it will be used (VAT was to replace income tax if anybody now remembers).
The book also makes it clear that we are already living on borrowed time.
Readers should also check out a book called Heat.
