I became a real fan of road cycling this summer when a minor injury confined me to the sofa during the last two weeks of the Tour de France. Along with every other British cycling fan, I was gripped with the race as Geraint Thomas made his way to victory in Paris. Therefore, when this book popped up on Kindle daily deal earlier this month, it was a bargain I wanted to snap up. It made an interesting and entertaining read, with information and anecdotes all told with Geraint’s dry and self-deprecating sense of humour.

The book is well put together with the help of ghost writer Tom Fordyce and covers all kinds of topics relating to cycling from people to places, and techniques to terminology. Geraint and Tom tell it like it is with no ceremony and (excessive) introduction. In fact, reading the first chapter makes you feel like you’ve walked into the middle of a conversation and missed the preamble to the topic. This style of storytelling though is part of the attraction of this account of the world of cycling, G style. I particularly smiled at the little snippets discussing aspects that would now be approached differently post-Tour win. For example: the formidable Alpe D’Huez climb, where Geraint won a stage, becoming the first Briton to do so, on his way to being crowned champion.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for a frank and entertaining insight into the life of a professional cyclist as told by one of Britain’s best. And I’m looking forward to following it up with reading The Tour According to G.

This was an enjoyable book pitched mainly at newcomers to the sport who might not yet understand some of the intricacies of the life of a professional cyclist and in the peloton, but still a worthwhile read for anyone who has good knowledge already. It is half-biographical, half anecdotal, with plenty of interesting facts and opinions from Geraint about people, events, riding conditions, training, and what he thinks is an optimal setup on and off the bike. It provides an insightful look into Geraint’s life as a young up-start, as well as a little on his experience in Italy and a lot about life at Team Sky. There was a glaring omission – that the professional world of cycling according to G has no doping or cheating, no deal breaking on the road. Although he alludes to those long-gone pesky Americans at one point in the book, there is nothing on doping team mates or rival riders, or any views on why he thinks the peloton is 100% clean (and therefore not an issue worth talking about). All in all, would recommend this book but it could have gone into more detail on some really important topics.

My brother loves cycling and so I bought this book for him - he loved it!

I am a recreational cyclist with a keen interest in professional road racing, ever since my days of riding the Cape Town cycle tour and watching the pro guys finish the event in incredulous times. The athleticism of professional cyclists is awe inspiring. This book details the sacrifices and stresses that the cyclists go through in order to be highly competitive. It is an intriguing look inside a sport that is insane, given the dangers and physical exertions that they endure in every race. Seeing guys get back onto a bike after breaking/fracturing vertebrae, collarbones, etc,, made this book a must read for me. What could possibly motivate a human being to go through all this? Well, Geraint Thomas explains it all in a way that is captivating and enlightening but with a lot of humour thrown in. I now have even more respect for these guys, which I did not think was possible.

I did not expect the book to be quite as entertaining as it proved to be. Whenever a section starts to get a bit tedious - very seldom - and you wish that the topic would change, it does. There is no desire to skip any pages, ever. I wish that there were a couple of hundred more pages dedicated to the characters of the Grand Tours that G has ridden with. That would never happen whilst he is still racing, I guess, for obvious reasons. Maybe in a few years time? There is still enough about the personalities of riders (and other important figures) in the book to make you want for more. Just buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I am relatively new to the sport of cycling, only taking it up a few years ago. Even more recently I have started to take more interest in the world of pro cycling and this is an excellent introduction to what it is really like riding in the peloton. There several laugh out loud moments, especially where Geraint gets mistaken for a Sky TV repair man.

I think this book would appeal to novices like me as well as more seasoned cycling fans. Geraint Thomas comes across as a really nice bloke, who tells this story as if he is talking to his mates. What also is evident though, is the hard work he has put in to make it to the top, and not just being able to rely on natural ability. I think if you read this, you will actually find yourself routing for him when watching the tour.

The book doesn't start very well and takes a few pages to grab the attention. Bear this in mind if you try a sample first. It rapidly improves as Geraint and his ghost writer find their voice. It is not so much a running narrative as a series of snapshots of his world - and all the better for that. The stories are good; the writing improves as the book progresses; little snippets illuminate the lives and personalities of the people who surround him in his cycling world. He mentions the downsides of cycling - injuries, comfort breaks, minor indiscretions in front of friends and in laws - but never starts to bore his reader. He's proud, confident, patriotic and independent-minded enough to disregard political correctness and assert his joy in being Welsh and his corresponding depression in heading east over the Severn bridge, but a grudging affection for his English colleagues is clear to see. If this book puts across his true personality he is a guy worth meeting - on or off the bike. Recommended.

I recommend this book for a cycling fan, you get a clear view of a pro life, training and racing.
On the other hand, i felt that Geraint Thomas is a bit narrow-minded, totally "uk-centered".

5.0 out of 5 stars A hella fun ride of a book!
Reviewed in Australia on 7 November 2018
This fun page-turner of a book makes you feel as if you were right there with Mr Thomas, whose dreams of being a cyclist started in the laneways of Cardiff, and witnessing the joys and struggles of trying to make it big in cycling's biggest stages: the mountains of France and the Olympic velodromes where he, along with his Team GB mates, notched gold twice and set world records in team pursuit.

In the book, 'G' offers valuable and often amusing insights into what it's actually like to be a professional rider--the discipline, the training, the sacrifices (both by himself and his loved ones), the people and the mindset that turned childhood dreams into reality.

More than anything, however, this book is about G's world instead of "the world of cycling". It's that close cocoon inhabited by figures from Team Sky and to some degree, by British cycling's biggest names. It is about getting started in the sport, sticking on the right kit (or wearing it right), training in all sorts of weather, diet and nutrition, gear, and where to find the best cappuccino after a good ride. It's also about the people who contributed to his success, the heroes sung and unsung, friends, and Sa, his longtime partner.
