Purchased for study of a Classics Open Uni Degree and found to be a worthwhile addition to their text books, especially when padding out essays for tma's. I found this a difficult book to read, straight through, but as a dipping book it's excellent.

I bought this book to aid my study of Ancient History at university, as recommended by my tutor. It's a good book, very easy to refer to and finding what you want is easy enough. I have found that some books can be very tough going, especially for those that are new to classics but this one fully explains Greek words and helps the reader to develop an understanding of life in Athens.
I like this book and think it is good value for money.

The book gives a useful overall look of Athenian life. It benefits from a brief outline of the history and then useful primary source material.
I recommend the book as a useful teaching text book. However, for me there was not enough detail as the book covers a rather wide subject range.
Alternative reading: 'Athens' Christian Mier for people who are interested in a more flowing account.

I purchased a copy of this book as an aid for studying the Open University module A275: Reading Classical Greek. I found the book to be very useful, informative and easy to use. The indexing reference markers which sit alongside the text are particularly useful when using the book as a study guide, or when citing from the text. The book contains some good black and white photographs, and some very useful maps. This continues to be one of my ‘go-to’ guides on Athenian culture, and I would definitely recommend it either for study or general interest.
