Burton states at the onset that this documentary might serve to undermine a presiding image of Pinter as a remote and difficult writer by showing us the collaborative nature of his activity in the theatre. The film certainly captures a contented, relaxed and engaged Pinter, happy to discuss his plays, the process of directing that applies to them and the demands of acting in them. Incidental to this, we also get some interesting perspectives on the genesis of a couple of his plays, and something of his working method - or rather working attitude - as a writer. As such, this DVD is a valuable resource for actors of modern drama, and students of this material.

Alongside the documentary, the DVD contains a complete hour-long interview that Burton undertakes with Pinter the day after the rehearsal-room workshopping of extracts of his plays. This is a real treat for those interested in Pinter's work, for in no other interview published or transmitted (and I know, I've trawled them all) does this author reflect at such length on the stagecraft, discipline and intuition demanded of the actor. The conversation is friendly and reflective, and is a crucial insight into the attitudes towards the stage of this celebrated writer. Pinter displays a characteristic reluctance to theorise, and demonstrates a certain distrust of contemporary training, preferring to steer towards issues of intuition and `common sense' when considering actors' judgements.

Harry Burton knew Harold Pinter very well - professionally & personally - and it's mercifully why this Film exists at all.
Via some fantastically revealing and relaxed interviews & conversations with Harry, Pinter talks about his love of and respect for Actors (no surprise as he was and remained until the last an Actor himself) and of course his work.
Working with a group of Actors Harry Burton observes Pinter interacting and directing them through scenes allowing us to watch Pinter the Director & Playwright in action.
Though nearing the end of his life, Pinter had lost none of his fire, passion or burning inquisitiveness & intellect - and all this shines through in Harry Burton's Film.
I know of no other Film that offers such a privileged and rare insight into Pinter the Man, the Playwright & the Director and so for me and any aspiring Actor, Playwright, Director or lover of Theatre - this is an extraordinary piece and an absolute much-watch.
Strongly recommended.

This is a must for any Pinter fan or any viewer who enjoys hearing about the creative process from the artist himself vs. the filter of a review, etc. One can read Pinter's interviews, but to see and hear him in an interview with Harry Burton and interacting with actors in a run-through of one of his plays add invaluable dimensions to his comments.

The sound and image are clear--perks because Pinter could be highly expressive and energetic once engaged by probing questions which Burton asked. Pinter's advice, as an actor and playwright, to the actors in delivering their lines or body movement, etc. on stage are invaluable. Missing even a second through blurry sound or image would be a shame.

I highly recommend this DVD.

Great Product, wonderful quality of DVD & absolutely fantastic customer service. It arrived a week earlier than expected, which originally was supposed to take 3 weeks, so that was a pleasant surprise. And, it doesn't hurt at all that Harold Pinter is my favorite dramatist. I've directed a production of one of his plays, and also studied his work rigorously during an undergraduate research fellowship in the Humanities at Wake Forest University. This documentary is invaluable to any Pinter scholar/enthusiast or simple anyone who wants to gain new knowledge and insight into one of the greatest literary, dramaturgical, poetic, political and polemic minds of the post-WWII era. Buy it!

The product (DVD) was identified as to play in all regions. However, when I tried to play it on my player (in the United States) it said it couldn't be played in my region. I have no idea of the quality of the dvd itself as I am not able to watch it.

HASH(0x9e4a8a80) out of 5 stars Good idea poorly executed 30 Aug. 2014

The production & interviews do not do justice to the quality of the subject. Neither informative enough for the general viewer nor rigorously intellectual enough for the informed. Pinter's legacy deserves better.
