Very pleased with the word a day calendar - lots of new information. Set out well with extra notes on the revise. Balances well on its plastic stand. The price is about right for this item. Ideal for scrabble players to increase their word knowledge of old and newly accepted and added to the dictionary words. The torn off sheets could be kept for further reference or recycled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Word Pleaser 14 Feb. 2007

This book does indeed help in learning new words. It provides a lackadaisical, languid or nonchalant (albeit interesting) way to garner new tidbits for expressing a plethora of minutiae which abound in the thoughts of the boorish and churlish within the hoi polloi (the gallery) on this mortal coil. Although a classic "pearls before swine" it is a good yearly purchase for adding expressions to the vocabularies of those unfortunates who do not have the initiative to have already expanded their diminutive tautology and meaningless drivel as they saunter along the "Bell Curve." Enough said with my dubiously enlightened verbiage.
4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good 18 Jan. 2008

I've always loved the page-a-day calendars, and I'm crazy about language, so this seemed like a perfect addition for my desktop--the literal one. I'm just a little disappointed by the word selection. Words such as cat's-paw and reciprocate are either already a part of my vocabulary or never will be. Overall, though, most words are interesting, well explained, and there's the added bonus on the back of each page of an explanation of the word's origin. Plus you get the option of receiving any calendar you'd like on line every day. A pretty good deal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanations but maybe a few too many unusable words 15 Feb. 2009

I was hoping for more words that I am familiar with but not sure of the meaning, or that would help me expand my daily vocabulary. In this calendar, there are just a few too many words that if used in conversation may come across as sciolistic...hmmm, I may need to rethink that.

But the explanation and examples, and especially the history of the word on the back of the page, are interesting and comprehensive.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful product. 5 Feb. 2009

My Father turned 97 in January. He uses this calander everyday to keep his mind sharp. Tests have shown that activities like vocabulary study and crossword puzzles help keep the mind active and help prevent dementia.
Additionally, my grandchildren love testing him when they visit. A multi-generational prize of a product.
