Product Description

Dennis Brown possesses one of reggae's greatest voices - a robust, warm soulful instrument of such beguiling power that his recordings are instant best-sellers on the strength of his voice alone. "Words of Wisdom", originally released in 1990' mantains the high standard of the classic album "Visions", while presenting the full flowering of Dennis Brown's vocal maturity on a diverse set of excellent songs. "Words Of Wisdom" is the album that was responsible for launching Dennis Brown to the next level of reggae stardom. Includes the classic numbers "Words Of Wisdom", "Cassandra" and "Money In My Pocket".

The late Dennis Brown is remembered as the Crown Prince of Reggae, and deservedly so. This classic 1979 release was the second of his albums to be pressed on Joe Gibbs' Record Globe label and cemented his place in reggae's hall of fame. From the opening chords, Brown wastes no time establishing his roots credentials with the stomping and uplifting "So Jah Say". The horns of Jamaica's finest session stars chant out over Robbie Shakespeare's rolling bassline and Sly Dunbar's tight percussion. The dream partnership of Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson at the controls makes Words of Wisdom one of the best produced albums of its era, and it shows in songs such as "Should I", which is for many Brown's finest tune, and of course the massive worldwide hit, "Money in my Pocket". While many reggae purists regard his first offering for the Joe Gibbs' stable, Visions, to be his best work, it was Words of Wisdom that launched his international career and it sees Brown at the height of his singing and songwriting abilities: he was 22 when it was recorded, and it is his warm, robust voice which really sells this record. These are some of his finest vocal performances, and for anyone who wonders how he gained the epithet "Crown Prince", this sublime offering gives all the answers. - Duncan Thomson

Although most people regard Visions to be his best album, for me Words of Wisdom just shades it. They are both classics but this is my favourite. I can't really explain why, I just feel that the songs on this album have ever so slightly stronger melodies. Dennis Brown is an incredible singer. He has great control and really puts emotion into it and this shines through when you listen to his music. His albums often contained roots songs and love songs and I think this combination of styles helped make his work more appealing to a wider audience and it is this that made him one of the most popular reggae artists ever.
The production by Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson is excellent and shows yet again why they were considered as some of Jamaica's greatest producers. As mentioned earlier the songs have some beautiful melodies and Dennis Brown's voice is as good as it has ever been. Lyrically it is also one of his strongest albums. The review above mentions Should I and I have to agree, it is an incredible song. But that's the great thing about this album, it's full of them. It starts in style with So Jah Say and the quality continues throughout. I wanted to pick four standouts and listening to the album I really struggled to limit myself to only four songs! But if my life depended on it I would choose Should I, Black Liberation, Words Of Wisdom and So Jah Say. Consider that this album also contains some of his most highly regarded classics like Cassandra and Money In My Pocket and you can maybe begin to understand why I rate it so highly. Nice mix of roots and love songs, great production and musicianship and brilliant vocals make this album a must buy. Enjoy!

I first heard this album on vinyl when I was a naive 13 year old white girl who had only ever listened to chart music; it opened my eyes not just to music but to a wonderful culture. As an album it has eveything songs with a message, love songs etc. and is one to move your hips to make no mistake. The overriding factor for me though is Dennis Brown he has the voice of an angel.. shame he's no longer around to make music.

5.0 out of 5 stars another gem 19 Sept. 2000
By Sean M. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The late Dennis Brown had a great string of albums through the late 70's and into the early 80's. A result of incredibly fruitful collaborations with Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, Brown yielded the lps "Visions," "Wolf & Leopards," "Words of Wisdom," "So Long Rastafari," "Joseph's Coat of Many Colours," and "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow," all of which are roots reggae classics.
"Words of Wisdom" found Brown in great form, combining "message" songs ("Black Liberation," "Love Jah," "Rasta Children") with his unbelievable love songs,("Cassandra," "Ain't that loving You") complete with his trademark wailings that made him as popular as he was. Anchored by the minor hit "Money In My Pocket," the album is beautifully sculptured.
This is one of roots reggae's crowning achievements and comes very highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs-not so great transfer to CD 10 Mar. 2002
By David A. Salvitti - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The songs on this album are excellent, and belong in anyone's reggae collection. Unfortunately, the CD transfer from Shanachie doesn't hold up well. I have the original vinyl record and wanted to get the CD. The CD version makes the horns and keyboards in particular sound "tinny" and wavering. I took the CD back and exchanged it for another, and it does the same thing. I'm keeping it because the songs are great, but I'm unhappy with the quality of the transfer. Does anyone else out there notice this on their CD???

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE DENNIS BROWN ALBUM 10 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Words Of Wisdom is my favorite Dennis Brown collection. Produced by Joe Gibbs and backed by top musicians this is The Crown Prince of Reggae at his prime. Dennis Brown passed on July 1, 1999 but his legacy will live on through his music and some of his All Time Best is featured on this CD.
