By Siriam TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 21 Nov. 2004
Format: Audio CD
This is it - the great and long overdue compilation that spans the man's career (1978 - 2004) but without any filler. John has never meant much in the UK compared with Bruce Springstein and Bob Seger but that he was more in touch with his roots has never been in doubt from the outset.
While he may not have enjoyed the global success of Bruce or Bob, what this compilation does is provide the case for an overdue re-evaluation of his contribution to Americana over the years, together with a band that has seen changes over the years but not suffered in the process. From his early street rocker stance when his name was John Cougar (especially on American Fool), through committed blue collar observer (almost making the case for being the Woody Guthrie of rock 'n' roll in the 1980s with his trilogy of Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy) and the great experiments of the 1990s onwards (Mr Happy Go Lucky from 1995 and the "roots" "Trouble no more" being personal favourites) where there is plenty to savour at a time when most such heroes would have run out of ideas and simply have a foot on the cruise pedal.
Each CD kicks off with a new unreleased song that sets the scene for all that follows with a cross section of tracks from all CDs released and with the emphasis on variety and a great running order, which when combined with the bous DVD makes this one of the great value buys of 2004.

If John Mellencamp's compilation 'Words and Music' spanned four discs there would still be insufficient room for his best work. This man has been vilified by trendy types in the British music press- heaven knows why.To my ears there is no similar artist- Springsteen,Lou Reed,Steve Earle, not even the great Neil Young whose output includes such consistently catchy, driving, brilliant rock songs. 'Pink Houses',Crumblin' Down',Check it Out' and the new 'Walk Tall' are my very favourites here, but I would also rate earlier Mellencamp songs such as 'Danger List','Justice and Independence',Rooty Toot Toot' and 'Case 795 (The Family)'equally as good though they weren't all released as singles as far as I know. Mellencamp's band's virtuosity seems to leap out of the speakers whether it's the slower numbers or the out-and-out rockers.John is an infrequent visitor to these shores which is a great shame as I can think of no British performer whose music excites me half as much.Buy this album today-you'll then want to explore his back catalogue.

Untypically of a British citizen, I equate my teenage years and early twenties with JM: istening to the US top 40 on Radio 1 every Saturday (taping every JCM song that hit and there were many); then having American friends in the late eighties and early 90s who shared my passion for his music; followed by a few summers working in the US and accumulating in seeing him perform live there to a large audience of followers at Jones Beach - he has a special place for me.

This album is flawless, an amazing array of heartfelt American folk and Americana that is as heartfelt as it is political, never failing to deal with all the nitty gritty of life; an album as full of hope as it is with despair. The musicianship is faultless and his storytelling captivating; a perfect summation of this man's career - so little appreciated outside of his homeland. Arguably a more folksy Bruce with a catalogue equally as impressive.

If you have ever enjoyed a few of his songs - buy this album and enjoy - there's nothing not to!

Released in 2004, this is a nearly 2½ hour-long double CD compilation, and is so much more satisfying than the short selection of 14 tracks called The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988. Words & Music included two new tracks when it was released, though `Thank You' is now also available on the special edition 4 CD box set On The Rural Route 7609 and `Walk Tall' * was released as a single in 2004 (though a line was changed because it was seen as too controversial for radio play!). Walk Tall has a positive message, made more obvious by the emotional video that accompanied it at the time. The tune is nice but not very original (slow folk-rock), the vocals are good, clear and direct, warm and friendly; it may be a little too produced with bland backing vocals: I think it's too amiable to have a real impact as a song. `Thank You' *(*) is more interesting musically, it's bluesy with a good beat, the vocals are more mature and a bit rough; the lyrics are on the naive-side, but it's part of the charm I guess, it's about being grateful and kind, "Let's give a wink to those girls who don't feel pretty. Let's find some water for those who need a drink." There's a little sarcasm in these recent songs ("Those that cannot connect the dots, hey look the other way"), but they don't really represent JM's career and his ability to be sassy, witty, cynical, confrontational, as well as perceptive and thoughtful.
I don't know why compilation must have new songs added, well I do: it's to get the fans, who have all the hits, to buy the compilations as well... As one of those, I don't feel these 2 previously unreleased songs justify the purchase. But if you're looking for a John Mellencamp compilation at an affordable price, this is the one to get.
