It is a period piece, basically, and her foreword says as much ... it also gave away hope for development of one of the protagonists, so I didn't have much interest in carrying on.
An interesting contrast to some of her other work.
The idea of the Dangerous visions anthologies was for writers to submit stories which would find problems being published or finding a voice in the mainstream outlets. This novella was one of the most memorable stories in the whole collection and as a long time SF reader Leguin remains one of the cream of the writers who also appealed outside the genre restrictions.
Without giving too much away this is a novel about imperial colonialism, an anti Vietnam war story (or any other war come to that) The human invaders are seen as ethically and morally questionable while the alien natives and culture of the planet in question are described very well. This is a metaphor for the invasion and genocide of the America's all over again. Highly recommended.
Rarely have I found a fiction book that has been such a pleasure to read.
