The Chimes of Mercury is named for the innermost planet in our solar system which, in turn, was named for the ancient Roman messenger god. Mercury is similar in appearance to the Moon, with lots of craters. Because it is normally not visible because of the glare of the Sun, Mercury can be viewed on in the morning or at twilight
This wind chime is designed and handcrafted for superior musical performance. It is hand-tuned to a universal, pentatonic (five-note) scale and acts in concert with the wind to create random patterns of wonderful sound. Harmonises beautifully with all the other Encore Collection windchimes
In 1979, GRAMMY Award-winning musician and instrument designer Garry Kvistad created the first Woodstock Chime from an aluminium lawn chair he found in a landfill. Fascinated by the Scale of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can’t be played on a modern piano, Garry cut and tuned the lawn chair tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of our best selling, musically tuned windchimes. Garry and his wife Diane founded Woodstock Chimes in 1979 and still develop the chimes today. It remains a family-owned business in New York’s Hudson Valley

The Mercury chimes are actually the smallest and highest-pitched of those that I bought. To my ears they are about as high as a set of chimes could go while one could still be able to clearly hear and differentiate between the pitches of each note. Go anything much higher and one would hear rather undifferentiated tinklings. Because they are so small, their sound is not only high pitched, but it doesn't carry very far - which can be an advantage, depending on one's own situation. For my purposes I put the small chimes relatively close to the recorder and the larger ones further back, in order to get a good balance.
The tuning of these chimes is to a mode on the pentatonic scale, and it really is incredibly, hauntingly, beautiful, going particularly well with sea sound. The only thing is that these bronze chimes are rather shrill toned. If I wanted the Mercury chimes for more normal use I would have chosen the silver finish version, for that has a smoother and more refined tone. However, I deliberately chose the bronze finish version of this and the Mars chimes in order to have some variety of tone in my chimes ensemble recordings - and I think that worked extremely well.
Actually I have made available a lot of CDs of my 'Wind Chimes in the Wild' series, which include Cornish clifftop recordings some of which use the Mercury chimes - all of which you can find if you Google "philip goddard e-store" (not in quotes).
I cannot recommend this wind chime, is a shame because in hand when shook it sounds very nice and it's well built.
I love being in the garden with the birds singing, trees rustling, and these delightful tuneful chimes in the background.
The quality is second to none .
Also the center weight is on the heavy side and tkaes stronger wind to chime.
But overall I am pleased because of its looks, just not happy to pretend it would play ankind of special tune that another windchime does not.
