I read this story to my children when they were about 6 and 8 years old. It is written in a style that is sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy reading and yet is simple enough for young children to understand.
The story is told among the Woodland folk on a boring rainy day when there is nothing else to do. Soon you will be enraptured.Trying to read one chapter a night and then put the book down is extremely difficult - you will want to know what happens next. Artful Owl tells Captain Beaky, Reckless Rat and Timid Toad,(with various interjections from Batty Bat and Hissing Sid),the story of Jesus, who tried to help people and teach them how to lead Christian lives, and eventually tells how those same people turned against him and nailed him to a tree. You will be warmed by the author's perception of the crucifixion and this part had us sobbing into our tissues. Other parts will have you alternating between aching with laughter at the Woodland animals' conversation and nodding your head as they ask the questions of life that we have all asked at some time or other.
I would strongly recommend this as a lovely book to give to any child (and his family), whether Christian or otherwise.

I have just finished reading this book to my six year old son who has thoroughly enjoyed it. The way the book simplifies the Bible in a way a six year old can understand is very clever. You feel that you in the band along with Captain Beaky and
his brave band. I remember fondly the song about the bravest animals in the land and their exploits with Hissing Sid. I have to admit to imagining Timid Toad speaking like Tony Robinson's Baldric character from Black Adder! The book deals with some of the harsh things in the Bible like the cruelty of the people mocking Jesus as he was carrying the cross and the nailing of him to said cross in an honest but gentle way. I was a bit unsure about reading this book at first but now I am really glad I did. The pencil drawing illustration art work is absolutely amazing. It is in fact 'The Book' (abridged) within a book. My son enjoyed it so much he wants to take it into school so his teacher can read it to his classmates.
Well worth the money if you can get hold of a copy.

I purchased this book for a Christening present for my great niece. My own children had been given it when it was first published, and loved it. It is a first edition in excellent condition. Exactly as described by the seller. It was well wrapped up, and arrived unharmed by the postal service! I recommend this seller, and will happily buy from them again.

A very funny story with beautiful illustrations. The gospel story is woven cleverly into the book as Captain Beaky and his friends explore the Bible together. I loved this as a child and now my daughter (8) really likes it too. The BBC Radio 4 play of the book is also excellent and worth tracking down online.

This is a lovely book which explores the principles of the Good News (Gospel) of the Christian message in a rather different and stimulating way. A great way to get younger children thinking about the life-changing message of Jesus.
