Product Description

Product Description

WOODBINE Woodbine (1999 UK 11-track CD album including Mound Of Venus picture sleeve WIGCD67)

Amazon.co.uk

After DJ Shadow released Entroducing..., it was only a matter of time before Britain's lo-fi kids caught up with the narcoleptic groove. Woodbine, the debut album from Robert Healey (ex-noise pop gods Membranes and Cornershop) resonates with late night weariness and hidden sensual pleasures. Songs like "Mound Of Venus" and the chocolate-delighting "Neskwik" lie somewhere between the salacious grind of David Roback's Mazzy Star and Lois' fragile tales of betrayal from Olympia, WA. Susan Dillane has a marvelous, dreamy voice--perfectly complemented by Healey's minimal, lazy-day backing and soft whisper. Woodbine makes for a great companion piece to Mogwai's soulful noise terrorism. This may be a debut, but it's fully-formed. --Everett True

this record makes me swoon, dribble and lie flat on my back thinking of summer days drinking wine inthe park. Deceptively layered tracks combine swathes of clanking noise, acoustic guitars, breathy vocals and acres of open space. Love it.

This is one certainly to divide opinion, you either love it as a chilled out /tripped out classic or hate it as a failed experiment, or worse, more likely ignore it as insignificant/pointless? The album is very laid back with dreamy sultry breathy female vocals on most of the tracks and she is the only thing that really holds the whole cd together. But where it becomes "difficult" is the peculiar musical backing which is somewhat shambolic, they seem to be throwing everything into the mix i.e strange sound effects and unusual percussion, it almost sounds like the drummer is playing saucepans at one point!! There is a male vocal on a couple of the tracks which helps break up and vary the themes laid down earlier on the cd but where they really excel is with a song like "classical" which is a creepy instrumental building to a final 30 seconds of spooky/spoken vocals and to be honest the cd would probably have been better with a bit more of this unusual quirkiness.

I bought this album nearly ten years ago now when these guys were on the end of some fulsome praise. They deserved it - this album is superb. I don't say that kind of thing lightly, it has taken me this long to decide to review it! Rather than woodbines the songs are like sips of malt whiskey unfurling beautiful complexity. The songs feel like they took time to perfect with layer upon layer, unique and authentic.

woodbine reminds me of a mix of slowdive, mojave 3 and a bit of adventures in stereo. (sorry about the potpourri/musical combo thing, it's just the easiest way to describe it)
it's a nice, kind of quiet little album, the girl and the boy singers rotate their voices between songs which is nice.
my hesitation in recommending it would be the price. i bought it in england so it didn't cost me as much...
