About the Author

Jane V. Blanchard, author and public speaker, was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She lived in Hampstead, New Hampshire, twenty-three years before moving to Sarasota, Florida, where she now resides. In Florida, Jane became active in several organizations benefiting women and hosted a weekly radio talk show, Women Matters. Jane loves the outdoors. She climbed her first mountain, Mount Washington, in 1974. Since that initial ascent, Jane has climbed twenty of the forty 4,000-foot mountains in New England. She started mountain bike racing at age 50; in 2002, she won second place in the Masters Division EFTA Championship Series. In September and October 2011, Jane, now a sexagenarian, hiked the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage across northern Spain. As she walked, she talked with women from different nations. The book, Women of the Way: Embracing the Camino, weaves these conversations with Jane's journey. When Jane married in 1974, her husband, Dennis and she joked about creating a lifetime of memories to chat about when sitting in theirs rockers in old age. At 61 years old, Jane is still creating memories, experiencing life as fully as possible, and looking forward to a long future.

It was excellent and extremely useful to me. I intend to do the camino next year and am a women nearing 60 who wants to do it on her own. Reading the many varied stories from a womans point of view was fascinating and there was one that matched my own circumstances completely. But having said that I could see myself in many more also. I now have a lot more confidence in going on my own pilgrimage. It was so well written I would have enjoyed it just as a book to read anytime, it had everything including lots of humour. I have now read umpteen books about this camino and this is my all time favourite. I will definitely take it on my kindle on my journey and read it again.

I have loved all of the accounts of experiences on the Camino de Santiago that I have read so far and there are a lot out there to choose from. This one by Jane V. Blanchard really stands out for me as one of the best, to begin with it is great value - it is not just Ms Blanchard's story but she has taken the time to record the experiences of other women on The Way. The diversity of the experiences I found most interesting, and there was something in Ms Blanchard's writing style that appealed to me. Thank you Ms Blanchard for sharing your experiences with we readers! Definitely one to re-read.

I've wanted to do the Camino for years so I read a lot of books about it. Jane's account has finally crystallized my plans because she goes through the practicalities as well as the emotional side of the Way. As a description of the route, it is useful but it also contains the perspectives of many women and what the journey means to them. Jane also has a no-nonsense style - even though there is some reflection - this is more of a narrative on the experience. Although this is about the women of the way, I love how Jane's husband Dennis is a constant, jolly presence. The love of two older people journeying together is one of the most touching parts of the book. If you want to walk the Way, you will learn a lot from this book.

I have read several books on the Camino. I found the authors account to be honest and inspiring. I admired her expressions of her deepening understanding and love for her husband and fellow pilgrims. I also found all of the practical advice valuable and very helpful. I am encouraged to plan my own pilgrimage and will be mindful of her tips and experience. A very satisfying and informative read.

As I am planning to walk the Camino next year when I have enough money saved I have been reading everything I can lay my hands on about The Way. I particularly like this book as it tells you about it warts and all! I think people need to be aware of the fact it is not a walk in the park!! Some of the difficulties and health problems described by the author have opened my eyes as to how hard it will be, but certainly hasn't put me off. Shall definitely carry a good guide book with me as I have no sense of direction I can find myself lost in Brighton sometimes! I recommend this bok to anyone interested in walking the Camino.
