Screen goddess Sophia Loren won a very well deserved Oscar for her strong and vivid portrayal of a war ravaged widow in the director Vittorio De Sica's neo -realist classic. two women chronicles the dreadful harrowing ordeal of the beautiful widow Cesira (Sofia Loren) and her shy and sickly daughter rosetta (eleonora Brown) as they escape the daily air raids in Rome by fleeing into the countryside.

The pair make there exhausting journey through and over corpses strewn mountains and burnt out valleys only to be brutally raped by the soldiers when they seek shelter in an abandoned church. all very very sad...seemes not to much has changed in the past 60 years.

Survival and shere perseverance in face of adversity. Two women is a very frank film with the universal message that our shared humanity transends all ethnic or political differences.

Sophia Loren can fit into comedy as well as serious in a blink of an eye. you just dont come across women like this in the main... charismatic, suffisticated, charming, and what a figure. produced by her husband Carlo Ponti....lucky man.

I warn you in advance this copy by Alpha video is a dreadful transfer one of the worst i have ever seen images are fuzzy low contrast poor colour about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.Alpha wake up and smell the popcorn

But its worth watching it just to get an idea what its all about, then give it away....perhaps one day a major company with money will make a quality transfer.

Two Women (La Ciociara) is a brilliant war time drama film featuring beautiful black and white cinematography.

Set in Italy during WWII the film is about a mother and daughter fleeing Rome for the, apparent safety of the countryside just north of Rome. Loren plays Cesira a shop owner in Rome with one daughter, she is having an affair with another man, though she cars little for him. Looking after her shy 12 year old daughter Rosetta, Cesira decides enough is enough and that they will leave Rome by train for her village. After arriving there are happy times and the war is more or less forgotten for a while. However it’s not that easy to escape and the war begins to catch up with them. Again they are forced to flee, this time back towards Rome which they decide ought to be safe by now to return to. Cesira & Rosetta rest at a ruined church to get some rest, however foreboding figures begins to creep out of the shadows and the two are set upon by a group of French Colonial Moroccan troops. Both are left with their spirits broken, the life taken out of them, as if they’re souls were no longer there. They are picked up by a truck driver who takes them to another small town outside of Rome where Rosetta sneaks away and has an affair with the truck driver. Once Rossetta returns the two eventually breakdown into tears as the mother begs for forgiveness and the film ends.

If possible get your hands on a Blu Ray Italian language version of this film, see it the way it was meant to be seen. I've seen a lot of negative reviews about blurry, fuzzy picture quality on the DVDs out there so watch out for that. The Blu Ray version I brought was in Italian or Spanish only, so mind out for this too, I understand Italian so that was fine for me.
