Wrong. The game then turns up the heat by confronting you with a mission to rescue someone from a Nazi concentration camp. 'OK.' I thought. 'No problem', I thought. Wrong again - the developers aren't shy of attempting to portray at least some of the monstrousness of Hitler's fascism. That one level is more memorably shocking than any single player 18-rated game I can remember, simply in the way it is introduced, scripted and executed. The game is worth playing for this alone, never mind the multi-class perk system and the upgradeable weaponry, as well as the multiple routes you can find, or create, by simply blasting your way through walls or secret passages.
Overall, I'm glad I went PC for single-player multi-plats. My 270x Toxic spits it out at max on 1900x1200 and it really does look head and shoulders above anything on console at the moment. This game is great fun and I'm not even half-way through it. With the ability earn extra game-modes and alternate play-throughs, this is definitely a worthy purchase.
I find the 1st game more stylish, the gameplay more fun and original. The New Order is just a bit dull, the mech action I played in the Fear games, I smashed flying drones with my crowbar in Half Life & there was a giant mech dog also in Half Life! It just shows how good Half Life was and how later games tend to rely on gimmicks rather than original gameplay.
It's not a bad game especially at the £13 I paid but not worth £20+, not to me anyway.
I've finished the game now and my views haven't changed. Appreciate that it is based in 1960 so the weapons have to be up to date but I miss the Schmeisser MP40, the Mauser rifle, the Thompson submachine gun and the German MP43/SturmGewehr-44 assault rifle from Wolfie 1 (incidentally few people realise how advanced this assault rifle was, I think it was the only assault rifle used in combat in WW2). In comparison, I found the weapons in Wolfie 3 a bit boring, I wish the game designers had used copies of real army weapons from the 1960 era.
I found the dual assault rifle & dual shotgun modes plain silly, sorry I suppose I was meant to find them fun but didn't. I find using 'real' weapons makes the game easier to connect to and therefore more enjoyable.
And please bring back the elite German female soldiers from Return to Castle Wolfenstein! They were great fun and challenging too. We have 1 female German baddie in this game, why not give her an attractive group of bodyguards?
Boy but look at it now, Great graphics and great storyline i would recomend this for a great shootem up.
It is sad how few of these games get made these days - with companies opting for inferior games like CoD - which have become self-sustaining creatures of mediocrity.
The variety of weapons and mission types allow a variety of styles of play from stealth to to just blast everything in sight.
The story line and plot engaged me thoroughly. Your companions are credible and engaging. I really cared about them. The alternate future is beautifully realised and the graphics gorgeous.
For me there were no cons and I look forward to replaying this game soon. I shall deliberately choose the alternative timeline the second time around to see what difference it makes.
I have been happily recommending and enthusing about Wolfenstein: The New Order to anyone and everyone since I started playing.
It very linear, but so what? Plus you also get the chance to relive the first level of the original Wolfestein. Don't all rush at once.
