Drilling holes just where you want them can be a bit hit and miss and this tool can in the right circumstances help you to manage that. However there are surfaces where that isn't the case.

What this does is hold a drill bit of the correct size (metric) steady over a predetermined spot whilst you get the hole started and that requires a few things to be in place. Firstly the markings for the hole need to be lines crossed not a spot to enable the in use drill guide to be lined up. Fair enough. Secondly you need a good source of light to see down the hole guide to get this in place properly. Thirdly and most importantly you have to be on a surface that allows it to grip well enough to stop the drill bit wandering. In order for this to work you have to press down hard so that the rubbery pads will 'stick' hard enough to stop the drill bit from forcing it off target. This is fine on surfaces such as clean tiles, varnished wood or pipe. Where it does not hold fast is on matte or loose surfaces like brick or plaster. The very places where you are most likely to be struggling to accurately line up the drill bit.

Overall, this is better than nothing at all, but it won't solve all of the problems.

As others have said the bushes are slightly oversize but it will last longer and be more accurate over time than the pieces of oak cut-offs that I had been using. I keep it in my daily tool bag but wouldn't use it when a drill press was available.

In answer to the reviewer who struggled to see their mark through the hole - push your drill bit through the guide, position it on the mark and then slide the guide onto the work piece. This assumes that you cannot use the guidelines on the device which are helpful.

I think you get what you pay for.

This drilling aid will help keep holes square but you have to accept that with the tolerances of the bushings and the limited size of the block, you are not talking about drill stand accuracy.

It is particularly useful when drilling into blocks and boards and almost useless when drilling into narrow pieces, as its accuracy is dependent upon its base sitting squarely on the work.

I have been using it to drill holes for dowels into face of boards forming the sides on a bookcase. The stop ring on my drill bit is kept well away from the timber, so there is no risk of it marking the board or getting blocked with sawdust. The holes were 10mm diameter and about 15mm deep into 20mm board. All the dowels lined up nicely and slotted home first time, so it did exactly what I wanted.

The block has some very useful cut outs, so that it is possible to see exactly where you are starting the drill, which would not be possible if it was solid and also means that the sawdust has somewhere to go, rather than up the bushing.

The bushes in this drilling aid are not as close a fit to the drill bit sizes as one would get with industrial quality guide bushes such as from Boneham & Turner and so one cannot rely on this tool to achieve holes reliably square (normal) to the face of the workpiece, but then one would pay considerably more for each individual bush than one pays for this tool! However, this tool will be an improvement on my trying to square my bit by eye and so will come in useful when it is impractical to use my drill in my drill stand. A suggestion I have read elsewhere to ensure accuracy is (a) carefully mark the centre point for the hole you wish to make using a centre punch for metal or an awl for wood/plastic (b) after putting the bit in the chuck of your drill, slide this guide up the bit to the chuck (c) carefully and firmly position the end of the bit in the mark you have made and hold (d) slide the guide down to the workpiece, hold the guide down firmly and (e) now drill your hole.

I would like the clearance between drill and guide to be tighter. It has its uses, but I would not buy it if I I had tried it first.

A very simple device that works well within its limits. It provides a squarer hole than I can manage by eye, with more versatility than a drill press.

Drilling horizontally or vertically into brick or timber can be a bit of a b***er, for me at least.....then along comes this wee gadget! I must say that I've found it a goodly little beast in this respect, avoiding over-enlarged holes in walls when I hit the edge of a brick beneath plaster, while the hollow segments beneath the guide holes are nifty for helping to catch the disgorged masonry dust. Others have commented on the metal guide tubes for the drill bits, and pondered their durability and accuracy of engineering tolerance. For my needs, this is not a big issue, given my previous propensity to drill off the horizontal/vertical was greater than any intolerance within this unit. As with the other Wolfcraft tools that I own, this is a well thought through and presented unit. A good addition to my tool collection.
