What this does is hold a drill bit of the correct size (metric) steady over a predetermined spot whilst you get the hole started and that requires a few things to be in place. Firstly the markings for the hole need to be lines crossed not a spot to enable the in use drill guide to be lined up. Fair enough. Secondly you need a good source of light to see down the hole guide to get this in place properly. Thirdly and most importantly you have to be on a surface that allows it to grip well enough to stop the drill bit wandering. In order for this to work you have to press down hard so that the rubbery pads will 'stick' hard enough to stop the drill bit from forcing it off target. This is fine on surfaces such as clean tiles, varnished wood or pipe. Where it does not hold fast is on matte or loose surfaces like brick or plaster. The very places where you are most likely to be struggling to accurately line up the drill bit.
Overall, this is better than nothing at all, but it won't solve all of the problems.
In answer to the reviewer who struggled to see their mark through the hole - push your drill bit through the guide, position it on the mark and then slide the guide onto the work piece. This assumes that you cannot use the guidelines on the device which are helpful.
I think you get what you pay for.
It is particularly useful when drilling into blocks and boards and almost useless when drilling into narrow pieces, as its accuracy is dependent upon its base sitting squarely on the work.
I have been using it to drill holes for dowels into face of boards forming the sides on a bookcase. The stop ring on my drill bit is kept well away from the timber, so there is no risk of it marking the board or getting blocked with sawdust. The holes were 10mm diameter and about 15mm deep into 20mm board. All the dowels lined up nicely and slotted home first time, so it did exactly what I wanted.
The block has some very useful cut outs, so that it is possible to see exactly where you are starting the drill, which would not be possible if it was solid and also means that the sawdust has somewhere to go, rather than up the bushing.
