I'm a big fan of David Weber and have read The Shiva Option which he co-authored with Steve White. The best I can say for the Shiva Option is that I quite enjoyed that book as opposed to hugely enjoying Weber's Honor Harrington books. Which brings me nicely to Wolf Among The Stars, another collaboration between the two writers. I get the feeling that Steve White did most of the writing because it does not have Weber's excellence of narrative and flow. There is a tendency to bog the story down with wads of unnecessary details which do not move the plot along. The story itself is weak and flawed. The characters are not well-developed and the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired. All told, this is not one of the better publications from Baen Books and I suspect that is down to the writing abilities or lack of them of Steve White. He's certainly no David Weber. I'd leave this one on the shelf. There are far better offerings out there. Try the Honor Harrington series or the Bolo series.

Would you go alone with the bad alien ?
on 24 October 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
The situation is that you have the mysterious alien device, you have a live captured alien, and you are the only people that know about the aliens. Would you go, alone, with the bad alien, to a place of his choice, so he can show you how the mystery device works ? Neither would any other sane adult, but in this book it happens. I am reminded of one of the old theater serials where the hero is shown going off a cliff or something, but in the next episode he is shown to have miraculously survived. The plot device of doing something stupid so there can be a last moment rescue should have been phased out decades ago.
The worst written Steve White book ever
on 6 July 2014 - Published on Amazon.com
The worst written Steve White book ever. Conversations are stilted, seems trite. Mostly written for young readers. Have actually set it down away 2/5 through, and I have no inclination to pick it up. Every facial expression, excited thought, sigh, reactionary body language is subsequently explained to the reader. Characters are not developed, very disappointing.

Good story that could be better told
on 5 December 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
The basic story idea was good, with an interesting plot line. The story telling itself was not up to the author's normal standard, especially interpersonal relationships, which seemed two-dimensional. Worth reading but not compelling.

I liked this series a lot. Nothing wrong with the story or the way the author writes. I can't think of anything bad to write.
