Amazon turned out to offer the best deal & as a prime member i sometimes opt for delivery to locker, So lets look at the price structure for this item.
I looked at a prime item fulfilled by Amazon with a power adapter for £79.95 & one that didn't show an adapter yet again prime fulfilled by Amazon for £54.70 a difference of £25.25, well being as i have plenty of 12 volt adapters i opted to save over £25 & ordered the cheaper one ( it is the same unit & adapters will cost a lot less than £25.25 even on Amazon) If you really like wasting your money the you can pay one Amazon trader £112.54 for the same £54.70 unit.
On receipt i opened the box & found the powermax MH-C9000 came with a continental plug power supply included.
You really have to watch the prices.
Now lets get down to the review... The MH-C9000 is a 4 bank charger conditioner for AA & AAA nicad & nimh cells.
The instructions say not to charge at less than 30% of the cell capacity as the charger may not recognise charging correctly, Cells say charge at 10% for 16hrs.
Battery conditioning takes sooo long you wish it had lots more slots.
It does the job it is supposed to do but overall by todays standard manufacturing prices & methods in foreign factories, it should retail for around the £30 maximum mark.
The market place has lots of smart chargers so you pay your money & take your chance after much research.
When you buy your new charger from a galaxy far, far away, or whatever nonsense marketing BS they put on the box, set aside an afternoon to indulge your inner geek. This is no ordinary charger. I know what you are thinking. "Wow. 50GBP to charge some batteries? Are you mental?" Well, if you're not thinking this, my wife did when she found out how much it cost. But that all pails into insignificance once you dig out every AA battery you own from the far reaches of the second drawer down in your kitchen and have a charging fest.
There is something strangely cathartic about reviving once discarded batteries and bringing them back to life through the various regeneration modes it offers. Even if they don't come back to full health, you can use them in the endless stream of flat/dead toys that keep the likes of Duracell in business.
All my batteries now last ages, far longer than the previous charger I owned, so for me it is well worth the money.
It even gives you a read out of the capacity of each battery after they are charged, so you can match similar batteries together.
One other thing, the display on this thing is mega bright. Keep you awake at night through closed eyelids bright. Bearing in mind some of the cycles can last literally days, set this thing up in the garage/kitchen/cellar where it won't disturb anyone.
I went back to using the cheap eneloop charger originally bought with my first set of eneloop batteries. I probably shortened the life of several eneloops by forgetting to remove them after the correct interval and finding them sitting in the charger really hot to the touch the next day. Since eneloops are not cheap and ruining them costs money I decided I simply had to buy another smart charger.
Because my previous smart charger had been so excellent I decided that it was well worth paying a bit more and getting an even better one. I do not understand the technicalities of charging batteries and looking after them for the best results but reading the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, this one gets very good write ups.
The main advantages of this one over my previous one are
a) I can select the charging and discharge rate
b) the back lit display makes it easier to use
c) the batteries are well spaced out so that they stay cooler
As I said the technicalities are beyond me and life is too short to bother to try and understand them but I have gathered that slower, cooler charging is better for overall battery life. Since I have sufficient stocks of eneloops and I am rarely in a hurry for my batteries, it makes sense to charge/discharge them at a slow rate (500/500), which this one allows me to do. If I ever need a set in a hurry, I can ramp up the settings.
Extremely happy with my purchase (and my stocks of eneloop batteries which have saved me a fortune over the last 3 years.)
The instructions didn't say what charge rate should be used for different power NiMh batteries but I have found many experts recommend half the mh/h rating of the battery to be the best, so a 2400mh/h battery should be charged at 1200mh/h.
Anyway, it is very good product, that after few months I haven't got a single issue with.
