having purchased another Reuel Golden book namely the similarly excellent "20th C Photography" from this author i bought "Witness" on amazon for more..

as the listed amazon overview states :"No other art form has pervaded almost every corner of the globe in the 20th century quite like photography. Accessible, personal, direct, it operates with the simple click of a shutter, but has a level of potential to sate the most ambitious appetite" i can add that perhaps even more so Photojournalism ie News Photo journalism has via the single powerful image has a level of impact that lingers perhaps far longer than a fleeting news clip on 24 hour news tv channels. and so it that i bought "Witness" eager to own, view and ultimately be informed and moved by the images contained. i was not disappointed.

powerful work by masters such as Don McCullin, Khaldei, Lange, Salgado and a host of more recent photogrpaphers make Witness a wide ranging historical as well as contemporary record of the effects of war, dislocation and fortitude. from WW2 to to Biafra to Bosnia to Iraq to 9/11 and beyond.

recommended for those willing to be moved and learn what often made can inflict on others. often haunting, sometimes amusing, "Witness" rarely disappoints with a decent historical sweep of 20th C news photojournalism here.

As an editor of Photo District News, the leading magazine covering professional photography, Golden provides, at once, an authoritative yet entertaining take on the best news images of the century--and an intriguing glimpse of those behind the lens. Not just a striking appointment for your coffee table, Golden's impressive tome is as impressive for its well-selected and edited images as it's incisive prose. Well recommended.
