The product itself works well, you can stand on it and it immediately returns your weight, followed shortly by BMI and Fat. The scales feel like a quality product. The device does, as another reviewer has said, work perfectly under Linux operating systems (specifically in this case Ubuntu 12.04). The website works pretty well, it identifies you from your weight and assigns each reading correctly. If it has an unrecognised reading, then it is easy to assign it manually. Well, I say easy, once you realise that what looks like a Recycle icon is the assignment button.
The major downside for me is that there is no security on the site, at least at the time of writing. This means that everything you enter on the Withings site is transmitted in plain text from your browser to the website. This includes your email address, password (for god's sake don't re-use a password from another site), your date of birth and, of course, your height, weight, fat and BMI. And not just for you - also all your family members.
I emailed them and tweeted them, but 4 days later there has been no reply. They obviously care as much for their customers' comments as they do for security.
I decided in the end to throw caution to the wind, and use a long random password, and fake dates of birth. This was an inconvenience, but not a fatal one. There was a further issue in that one of the dummy dates I chose was 1 January 1970, which apparently is an invalid date according to Withings.
A security certificate for a website costs next to nothing for company and only takes minutes to set up. That Withings treat their customer data so casually is a huge concern.
A good product, but be aware that your data is not being looked after, I would recommend using dummy birth dates, a unique password and try not to be too paranoid about the world knowing your physical characteristics.
Perhaps oddly, given my comments, but I am happy with my purchase, but you have been warned.
is £119 excessive for a device that lets me track my weight loss progress, send data to my trainer, view statistics and trends on my phone, send data to other online fitness services (such as runkeeper), keeps me motivated and interested in tracking my weight, and does all of this with very little input from me?
They're still expensive for what they are though.
I've got into the habit now of stepping onto the Withings scale now every morning just before I get dressed for work, and I get fairly consistent readings. I think that some of the inaccuracies mentioned in other reviews don't take into account that you weight does fluctuate quite a bit throughout the day. And I do see variations in reading depending on the time of day that I step on the scales.
Do I recommend these scales?
Wholeheartedly yes, with the minor caveat that if you're on a budget you can achieve the same result with a pen and paper and a much cheaper set of scales.
Hopefully they wont break in a few months, as it is early days yet, but they seem resilient enough. Also very stylish in the bathroom.
They come with a set of feet so that you can use them on the carpet, but I prefer using them on a hard surface so havent tried these yet.
Love the design and love the wireless. Have downloaded the App for my iphone which makes it even more fun to use. It also works with runkeeper and other apps, such as fitbit. I Just cant wait to lose weight so I can see the graph go down. It makes weight loss more exciting, so I would definitely recommend buying one.
I bought a set of white scales for my partner for Christmas 2012. In response to Mr C Roberts' useful review about the website security, I can attest that the Withings website does now employ https (encryption) for the setup and access to your personal details. Seems like they paid attention!
I would say that since this market has become more competitive, there are other similar products available from other companies, some for less money. If I were advising somebody making their first purchase of personal health monitoring hardware, I would certainly also look at the FitBit Aria scales, which are about two-thirds the price of these.
Nevertheless, the Withings data integrates well with so many other services, including a couple I already use - MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper - that I just wish Withings would make more products to measure things like heart rate and sleep to accompany these scales.
Good product. Good apps. Expensive, but the information and its presentation are invaluable.
How accurate they are I cannot say, but for relative readingsI'm sure they are fine especially for weight measurement. Ignore the BMI as BMI measurements are a waste of time for anyone who does any form of sport/training requiring muscle mass.
Every pro rugby player out there would be classified as obese using BMI even if they had 9% body fat ...
Integration with MyFitnessPal a bonus.
