This book was funny and interesting from the start. There were a lot of serious moments just like there were plenty of humorous ones as well. The book itself was written so that it was a nice fast paced read, and I did in fact read it in one sitting. The storyline was great, and very entertaining. I also enjoyed that there was not just one story we were following, but the story of both siblings. It gave chance once in a while, making sure you didn't get bored.
The characters were fun to meet. The moment I heard about the Hunters, I hoped that we would get to know them better, and we did. The relationship between Mia and Colt is sweet and thrilling all at the same time. Although Mia was a bit of a ditz in my opinion, I guess it did work out well in the story, but more than once I was face-palming myself or cringing at her.
All in all, the book was great. I loved all of the characters, and I would have to say my favourite would be Colt, because of his badass-ery. This book made me laugh, gasp, say "aww!!" and even made me sad. Gabriella did a wonderful job with it, and I have to give it 5 out of 5 stars.
This was a lovely story of Mia & Dino who are surprised & horrified to learn that they are actually witches & so is their Mother & their Aunt.
They get sent to stay at The Glass Castle where they can learn their powers in a protected environment.
I really enjoyed this, it was great how they learnt what powers they had & also learnt about great danger that was lurking in the shadows.
Mia is a sweet girl, open to everything, Dino was surly, but only because he was scared.
It was a very light hearted book & very easy to read.
I will be very interested in reading more about these characters.
This book starts with a bang as there is a fire in the cellar. Mia is the one who caused it although she has no idea how but it is her brother, Dino, who is suffering from it. Her mother and aunt take it all in stride and explain that it's about due as they're witches so off to the Glass Castle they go.
Now Dino is in a lot of pain, which is excellently explained, and he portrays the pained, grumpy, disgruntled teenager to perfection. He does make friends though and is very good friends with Blue aka Buttons (who is simply brilliant!)
Mia makes friends with a girl her own age called Kizzy who is a seer. Mia doesn't know what she is and almost feels jealousy of Dino although she knows how much he is hurting.
So put these two together with a group of other witches, throw in the danger of the unknown and you have a fantastic story that will draw you in and keep you turning the pages WAY past your bedtime!
I loved the relationship between Mia and Dino - it was so typically familial. Deep love and yet there is still irritation, jealousy, envy and even hatred, they're all there.
A short mention of Colt - he is the love interest of Mia and of course, he has to be a hunter. I loved Colt! He is such a brilliantly written character - a perfect mix of being a bad-ass, so arrogant it makes your teeth itch but then a hint of vulnerability that makes you want to hug him.
The plot line is well paced and the story and backstory is very well written. Nothing feels rushed about this book, everything seems to develop at the perfect time. Mia is only 16 and as such, some of her reactions had me shaking my head but it wasn't long before Colt came along and sorted things out. Really enjoyed this and would recommend without any doubts. Looking forward to book 2.
We begin by meeting Dino and Mia, brother and sister. They, via an event (I won't mention what as it'd be a spoiler) discover they are/to become witches. To train, they're sent to The Glass Castle where many other young witches have been sent for generations to learn to discover, control and use their powers and skills.
At the castle we meet Wendolyn, an older lady, surprisingly old actually, who is in charge of training and watching over these young adults.
There are many different kinds of witches and each individual has to discover their own power for themselves. There are various Arcana, like Sententia and Tempestus.
There are also the feared Hunters who are powerful indeed. Hunters are born and bred to live, fight and serve, to protect their covens and their communities, at all costs.
We meet a couple of Hunters pretty early on in the book and not long after the initial meeting between them and Mia, she bumps into one of them again, Colt. Colt unexpectedly helps Mia (I won't say how, it'd be a spoiler).
Colt and Mia develop an interesting relationship throughout the book. Hunters as a rule are to be void of humanity and emotions to enable them to fight and hunt rivals without emotional ties to hinder their judgements. So, the relationship between the two is an unusual one. Mia brings out the humanity in Colt, which he somewhat dislikes initially, though he does eventually begin to accept that he has some kind of feelings for Mia. You'll have to read the story to understand the dynamics between these two characters.
The enemy: There is a rival coven on the lurk around the glass castle. This is where we meet Tol.Read more ›
