This book is told from the point of view of Brusenna and you feel like a concerned mother as you watch this timid little thing take on a witch who has managed to defeat every experienced witch around. It almost felt like David and Goliath! However, as Brusenna charges forward in her mission, you watch her grow into a mature witch in a matter of months. In fact she becomes one butt kicking witch, who puts the rest to shame. I loved her from the moment she entered the story and felt like a proud mother as she showed such strength of character in times of adversity.

I did get a little annoyed with her for continually shutting Joshen out, who basically was the best thing that have ever happened to her. This gorgeous guy basically throws himself at her and will do anything for her. He is brave and strong and she treats him like china!

There are some extremely lovable characters in this book; Bruke the dog, Stretch the horse and Pogg, who was rather a strange creature. Not sure I agreed with everything that happened to a couple of them in the book, but I will stay quiet as I don't want to spoil the story.

I thought the world building was excellent and I loved finding my way through to the Espen's domain. I felt the author created a very believable fantasy world.

When Brusenna came in contact with the older witches, I was so annoyed. They treated her so badly after she managed to save them all. They were rude and obnoxious and I think I would have put them back under the spell.

The songs the witches sing are beautiful and poetic in nature. I think the author must have dabbled at some point in poetry, perhaps she has a poem anthology hidden under her bed. The songs just flowed and made sense completely.

I wasn't sure about this story when I first started reading it but I kept going and am really glad I did. This is a fabulous fantasy tale and I hated reaching the end. Brusenna, the heroine, starts off as a pretty clueless, almost stupid, girl and it was this that almost put me off reading it. However, it becomes clear that her mother has kept a lot of witch related stuff from her because she has tried to protect her. When her mother is taken it leaves Brusenna totally unprepared and woefully lacking in witch skills to try and rescue her. During her adventures she collects a guardian and after many trials and tribulations reaches what you would expect to be a safe harbour but a peek at book two lets you know it's anything but! A wonderful free book for those of us who like to believe in magical moments and pure escapism.

Brusenna has always been hidden away by her mother, but when she and the rest of the haven witches are taken captive by the dark witch Espen, Brusenna is the last witch left, so with the help of her guardian Joshen and her dog Bruke, she must find a way to do what no other witch has done before and defeat the dark witch.

Witch Song is a really brilliant and charming story with true love, adventure and magic it is a good story for YA fantasy readers. The story was non-stop and really captivating and action packed.

I love Senna's growth in this book but it does not change her too much from the shy insecure girl from the beginning, I admire how she does admit her mistakes and acts on them and how she reacts maybe not in the right way but a realistic one. Also Joshen is also a great character as he is brave, strong and totally loyal to Senna no matter what.

Also the secondary characters are well rounded from Senna's mother Sacra to the Captain Parknel. The romance is so sweet and gentle but is also very innocent.

I would recommend this book to people who like light but enchanting YA fantasy.

Young witch Brusenna has been shielded from the harsh realities of life - namely that Dark Witch Espen has captured most of the other Witches. Then Brusenna's mother, Sacra, and her friend, Coyel, are also taken and Brusenna finds herself alone. Untrained and naïve, Brusenna doubts her ability to take on the Dark Witch, yet knows she has to try. Aided by her faithful hound Bruke, and a young man, Joshen, who becomes her Guardian, Senna leaves the safety of her home to track down Espen and release the captive Witches.

They are pursued by Wardof and his sidekick Garg, both of whom are in the service of the Dark Witch. Senna is forced to defend herself by using her Witch Song powers. She uses the properties of plants to obstruct her pursuers, and also transforms herself into a seal. Often finding help where she least expects it, Senna is determined to succeed in her quest.

Witch Song is a fine YA fantasy novel, utilizing many of the usual aspects of the genre. Readers will find much to identify with in Senna's journey from naïve, sheltered young girl into strong, determined womanhood. There is mystery, danger, romance and a touch of humor - all helping to push the story along. The Witches activate their powers through song, rather than casting spells or waving wands, and this is refreshing. If there is to be a sequel, I would be interested to see the Witches use the other disciplines of Earth, Water and Sunlight, for Witch Song only features the power of plants.

I would recommend this book to all lovers of YA fantasy.
