Review

'In Ant's village, Wishcatchers can grant wishes, sometimes with unexpected consequences ... The book mixes magic realism and mystery with the daily life of friendship, school dynamics, and family ... Both major and minor characters are fully realised, flawed but likeable. This is a compelling, engaging story about friendship and wishes that will appeal to a wide range of readers.' -- Booklist, American Library Association 'This is a great story of friendship, family and tolerance, with a little bit of bullying behavior thrown in. Upper elementary and lower middle school students will identify with the characters and the emotions of the girls.' -- Curled Up With a Good Kids Book blog 'This is a book about friendship that is filled with magic and mystery, The Wishcatchers is a story that teaches us very valuable lessons we sometimes tend to forget.' -- Inis Magazine

I read this book in 3 days. I read it in 3 days because it kept me gripped to the extent that I could not put it down.

The story focuses on Antonia, a girl who is being bullied at her local school. In order to escape the hustle and bustle of her life she spends nearly all her time down at Wishcatchers point. The Wishcatchers are hooded figures who come ashore at night and grant the wishes of others. they all wear a shell necklace, which interestingly enough, is what Antonia finds in the early part of the book. A new girl called Clarissa comes to stay in the village and Antonia makes a wish that Rosie would bully her instead. The wish comes true and Antonia is full of remorse after she and Clarissa become friends.

Some time later, they discover the reason for Rosie being a bully is she herself is getting bullied by her older brother and her parents do not believe her. The two girls try to help Rosie and get the Wishcatchers to grant her only wish.

This book highlights for me the seriousness of bullying, having been bullied at school myself, hoping for a miracle and the true importance of friendship. A wonderful read. But once you get to the end of the book, you too will be "wishing" there was more!

Always looking for new books for my 7 and 9 year old to try. This was great, quite a bit of scene setting but the story was easy for them to follow. All the girls want to know now is what happens next in the school holidays - surely there are more to come.

I used this story as a class reader for my composite P1-7 class.

They really enjoyed the story - they felt it could have been set in their area (NW Scotland) and identified with all the characters. The story was about Antonia, a girl who is being bullied by some of her classmates. When she wants to escape the bullying she goes to Wishcatcher's Point and sets a wish that someone else would be bullied. But how will she feel when her wish comes true .... ?

The story explores the complex emotional issues involved with bullying and it led to many interesting discussions with the children about appropriate behaviour and what you should do if you feel you're being bullied. Interestingly their feelings were not black and white on the issue.

This book treats the seriousness of bullying in a sensitive way and in the end you have sympathy for both the bullied and the bullier. A well written and researched book - it's a fantastic read and the class can't wait for Carol Christie's next novel.
