This is about series 1 as well as series 2: It really is worth watching both. They portray the nitty-gritty of life as a British agent in France during WWII, especially the female agents. They had to face the same dangers and physical challenges as men (parachute drops into enemy territory, for example) and also discrimination, sometimes ridicule and vilification from the enemy, from the men in Occupied France and England, and sometimes from their own families. The characters come from different classes and backgrounds and the varying challenges they face, and the way they come through them, form the heart of this series.

Series 1 sets the scene and develops the characters, an interesting and eclectic mix, united only by the fact they all speak French well enough to pass for natives. The closing episode of series 1 culminates in a daring rescue attempt to free one of their own from Abwehr headquarters. The only reason the prisoner is not in the clutches of the Gestapo is because the local Abwehr kommandant is under severe pressure to deliver her knowledge up to secure his own future. A parallel could be drawn with modern office politics; this is the kind of detail that sets these series apart from everything you have seen before. It contains the same kind of insight as "Piece of Cake", which is about fighter pilots instead of spies.

Series 2 takes us further into the progress of the war, illustrating just how haphazard the whole war effort was. Senior spy-masters having to beg for a plane over the phone is just one example.

Another link between the two is the presence of that wonderful actor, Jeremy Northam, who is underused in series 1 but given far more to do in series 2 and has the opportunity to show the range of his acting skills.

There is not space here to do justice to these DVDs. You will just have to order them and find out for yourself what you have been missing.
