Robson Green plays Tony Hill a totally disfunctional and socially inept psycologist to perfection.
If you enjoyed Cracker and Messiah Wire in the Blood takes it to another level. It's a real shame that no more progaammes have been made because this is television drama at it's best
I am hard of hearing and depend on subtitles when watching anything with a plot you have to follow. Disappointing on that score but still an excellent drama.
Unlike many DVDs I've bought, I know I'll re-watch the episodes again. There's so much more depth to them than your average run-of-the-mill police procedural TV show. I wish that ITV would commission more episodes as Val McDermid writes more books in the series. Any chance?
Bradfield in NE England clearly has more than its fair share of serial killers, enough to keep quirky psychologist Dr. Tony Hill busy for 23 gruesome cases. His skills involve being able to identify with killers and victims - he entering their minds, often disturbingly. Police grow increasingly to rely on him. Romantic undercurrents exist between him and CI Carol Jordan (Hermione Norris). Less so with Carol's successor Alex Fielding (Simone Lahbib), she struggling to do her job without neglecting son Ben.
Robson Green is excellent as Tony Hill (perhaps at times overplaying the eccentricities). He welcomes the move from "light and fluffy" roles (his words in one of the interesting bonus interviews). Nothing "light and fluffy" here! His character is constantly in danger, twice suspected of murder, several times lucky to escape with his life.
Not all is perfect. Tony's college link only occasionally convinces. In fact most of the time it is never even alluded to. Sometimes pretentiousness seems to masquerade as style with the camera work. A few cases are ludicrous, not standing up to close examination. (Judge's head on a platter, anyone?) Even these, though, are eminently watchable. Many viewers may regret the pre-credit spoilers, which - amongst other things - destroy the opportunity to reflect on what has just been seen.
For the most part the series does very well what it sets out to do. Throughout there is much that deliberately unsettles - especially in Seasons 5&6 with their marked upping of gore and erotic content.
Recommended to those who like to view what is dark and challenging.
But my huge negative is the box-set, it is just awful, plus the discs are hard to know what series they are, plus they have shoved discs on top of each other, so after time the discs will get scratched plus they keep falling out. All in all a wonderful series but sadly a awful box-set.

If there was a minus star I'd click on that, none of series one's disks would play and several later disks froze at the menu so you couldn't select any episode. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Red John :)

WHY NO SUBTITLES! I was so looking forward to getting my discs but being hard of hearing rely on subtitles. It's really poor in this day and age not to have the option.Published 2 months ago by SoniaG
