By D. Elliott TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 3 Jan. 2015
Format: Paperback
It is over 50 years since I first winter-climbed in such places as the Northern Corries of Cairn Gorm and Creag Meagaidh using a single straight picked ice-axe with long wooden shaft to cut steps - and handholds! Very little was available in the way of information for the limited number of winter climbs, and Grade V was mentioned only in whispers. The number of routes and the degrees of difficulty has grown exponentially, and over the years a variety of guides has been produced. These include the SMC’s definitive guidebook to ‘The Cairngorms’ which is a mighty tome for both summer and winter, and it excludes Creag Meagaidh which is in the SMC Ben Nevis publication. Also the SMC has a selective ‘Scottish Winter Climbs’ which again is a mighty tome being for the whole of Scotland.

Cicerone’s ‘Winter Climbs in The Cairngorms’ is also a selective guidebook but for its limited area it includes more routes than the SMC, and it covers more venues. For example Garbh Choire Mor is in the SMC definitive guidebook but is excluded from its selected winter climbs, yet Cicerone presents over 20 routes in the lower and upper corries from Grade I to VI,7 and many are starred quality. Content is a personal considered choice of routes deemed worthwhile by the authors, Allen Fyffe and Blair Fyffe, on the basis of their wide experience of winter climbing in Scotland and their intimate knowledge of the ever progressive climbing scene.

‘Winter Climbs in The Cairngorms’ is a father and son team effort. Allen has over 40 years experience and in 2002 he received an MBE for services to mountaineering. He is well respected for guidebook writing, instructional books, articles to magazines and journals and media participation in addition to his pioneering of new routes.

Good book for quick reference. Not enough detail on route or breakdown of multi pitch climbs
