I received my copy today, and played and re-played it a few times. The first song, "And winter came" brought back the Enya-magic instantly. Also, on some other songs, her voice in the background sounds more 'angel-like' than before, which sets her music apart from the rest for me.
The album's first single, "Trains and winter rains", is very rhythmic and up-tempo. You either hate it or love it. I love it, can't see what's not to love, altough i was a little surprised to hear her sing about cities, neon lights and cargo trains, the most modern words i've heard in any of her songs so far. So there go my Tolkien-esque visions i always associate with her music. Nevertheless, i love it, and personally i think it's one of her best up-tempo songs.
All the songs are winter-themed, and about half of them are *heavily* winter/Christmas-themed. While the songs are good (including the re-recorded Silent Night) you probably won't play them outside of December. This leaves very few songs for the rest of the year, making this album rather short. As usual with her albums, it always seems we have to wait so long for a new album, and they seem too short. Of course this goes for any artist you can't get enough of, but it left me a little disappointed as it'll all be over too quickly after Christmas, and the waiting for a new album starts all over again.Read more ›
Now, if only Kate Bush would do one!!
It comes indoors and then back out to the car when I am travelling.
If you like Enya you will love this album.
Enya's been dabbling with the idea of releasing a full-fledged Christmas/winter-themed album for years now, and now, here it is. "And Winter Came" is indeed a beautiful effort from Enya. As always, the music is enchanting and very atmospheric, but that is also its Achilles' heel. As easy as it is to be swept away by the sheer beauty of it all, it is unfortunately just as easy to get lost along the way, too.
For me, Enya is at her best when her soul shines through all of the production gloss. "Trains and Winter Rains" is basically just "Orinoco Flow", "Caribbean Blue", "Anywhere Is", "Only Time" and "Amarantine" in winter disguise. It is disturbingly similar to all of the above. The by far best tracks are the songs: "Last Time by Moonlight", "One Toy Soldier" and "The Spirit of Christmas Past", which are all Enya at her very best.
In conclusion: If you are a fan of Enya, you will love this album, just as you loved those before it. But, if you are new to Enya, or just looking for a Christmas album, this album is not likely to interest you as much as it does all of her many followers.

The ghostly/spectral/haunting quality of Enya's voice and compositions is ideally suited to an album that whilst it does not exactly celebrate winter, definitely acknowledges the... Read morePublished 1 month ago by A. WILSON
