Dr. Spackman begins by explaining some basic psychology and neuroscience that underpins his techniques. The main purpose of the book is for the reader to construct their own Winner's Bible - a booklet with pictures and words that represent various aspects of your life that you wish to improve. The idea is to look through your own "Bible" every morning to help you achieve your goals. The book explains several techniques to help with this such as Fixed Visualisation and there is a brief introduction to Mind Mapping. Another important aspect of the book is an Online Audit, in which the reader asks several friends to anonymously outline their strengths and weaknesses through a web-based tool. This allows you to learn valuable lessons about yourself that your friends may not have the courage to tell you to your face!
The book is an interesting read in itself and I found that the best approach was to read the book once through before starting your own Winner's Bible, and then start again this time following the instructions in each chapter. To get the full benefit of the book does take a long time and an awful lot of hard work. Don't expect instant results! The online audit in particular takes a lot of courage to do. But I did find the process highly enjoyable. I have managed to change some aspects of my life that were a real problem for me in the past and that I thought were just part of my nature. But I could only do this by strictly following the instructions in the book.
I have given this 4 stars rather than 5 for three reasons. Firstly, the tone of the book can be a bit irritating at times. Secondly, as someone with a science background I was a bit disappointed that the psychology and neuroscience theory in the book is very limited. Even though it is written for non-experts the scientific explanations of his techniques were fairly cursory and I would have liked more. On a similar note, although the book has a wide scope with chapters aimed at improving various areas of one's life I was always left wanting more.
I am not an avid reader of self-help books but those I have tried have helped me to make incremental changes in my life so I cannot compare this to many other books in this genre. However I can say that compared to some of the others I have read is not simply a matter of reading the book once. It can work if you are prepared to spend a lot of time re-reading it and working through it.
Once I started to read it I genuinely couldn't put it down. I loved the way it flowed from one section to another and that your were directed to read sections further on that had relevance at that point and then relevance further on in your 'journey'.
I use the 'over-used' word journey because that is truly what I believe I have been on. I have created my own bible, changed parts of it a few times already to compliment me as I grow into becoming more self confident and self aware.
If you need help understanding what you really want from life then buy this book today.
My conlusion: A pleasant surprise. You have to do a lot of work with this. Not simply things like "close your eyes and imagine" but things like lists, deep thinking, an online audit and the construction of your own Winners Bible. I can certainly see why this works AND I like the authors experience in Neuroscience rather than pop psychology. I am still completing my bible but have read the book in its entirety and some of the smaller messages like how to organise yourself, how to keep hold of things you learn have already started to make a difference.
At this stage I can logically see why his Tools work. VERY few people can remain motivated for long extended periods of time. We normally need an incentive, like a GOAL or a influential person or a massive need and then after a short time we settle back into normal operating mode. I can see how your Winners Bible can serve as a 'refresher' or 'energiser' to keep us on the motivated path.
I can also see how the Goal setting works. Again, we need to aim for something real and and know where we stand to where we want to be.
What perhaps MOST appealed to me is that he offers a scientific explanation as to why we sometimes struggle in our daily life. Why are we not motivated enough? Why canwe not get to where we want to be? Oftentimes in our careers and lives we hear it is because we "don't want it enough" or "dont work hard enough" or "arent hungry enough" or "complacent". We then lookat people who have made it and ask ourselves if and why we are so much worse than them? Now we know the answer and it is in line with what I thought always thought. It is never as simple as cajoling yourself or being angry with yourself. It is so much more complex than that.
So far, I am very impressed and think a lot of other self-help authors who have no scientific understanding of the brain should look at Kerry Spackman as THE bar to reach.
The only reason I have not given 5 stars is because I have not had long enough to test the results long term.
Finally, I really like how he describes the Limbic Master. A worthy goal of how to be.
I sincerely hope that my Winners Bible does have the impact that it should.
