Actually what I got was a fantastically written record of how the fighter pilots and others surrounding them must have felt every time they heaved themselves into their Spitfires, not knowing whether they were going to return to their friends and loved ones, with all the emotions that go along with it.
I can't remember the last time a book moved me so much, by the end I couldn't put it down, had a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.
A beautifully and sensitively written book about one of the most important two weeks in our history, and I hope it's not the last from Mr Powell.
An excellent read.
Well done Group Captain Powell!
It's well formatted, on my iPad at any rate, and certainly long enough for one to `get into' the main characters, the experienced flight sergeant and the inexperienced pilot officer.
However, I really can't say that I enjoyed it very much, not the author's fault, mine, I don't like split reading. By that I mean I like a story to be fairly linear and `seen' through the eyes of one character - I don't mind if it's God like or third person a la Caesar but I don't like two folk telling the story. I find it difficult to get to grips with the character(s) and I think an author misses a trick in fleshing out one if they have two main characters to deal with. I won't say more as it may spoil the plot.

I enjoyed this book very much indeed, it is a tribute to the author that he was able to describe every one of the battles in the air in a new fresh way. Read morePublished 6 months ago by Graeme Diggle
I've read many books about the Battle of Britain but this one is by far the best. It may be fiction but typical of what those 'few' lived through.Published 10 months ago by RHA Chiddick
Fiction based on fact but realistic - well written and better than most of this period. PeterD Wings Over SummerPublished 10 months ago by PeterD
