By The Wolf TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 31 May 2014
Format: Audio CD
As Texan singer/songwriter Jolie Holland's new album 'Wine Dark
Sea' grinds into gear with the bristling opening track 'On and On'
we are immediately aware that a new kind of energy has sprung
into being in her artistic vision. Darker, dirtier, looser and built
to connect directly with our nervous system and imagination. This
is extraordinary stuff and I think she must know just how good it is.

The shuffling piano ballad, 'First Sign Of Spring', which follows must
count as one of the finest compositions in her career so-far. There's more
than a whiff of Martha Wainwright's unsettling autobiographical exposure
about it (indeed, these two performers could well be Sisters under the skin)
in the mewling vocal twists and turns. It is a wonderfully affecting song.

Elsewhere, the rough and ready, almost hallucinatory arrangement of
'I Thought It Was The Moon'; the simple romanticism and slightly drunken
tenderness of 'All The Love' and the raw and broken blues of 'Out On The
Wine Dark Sea' (channeling the spirit of Tom Waits) makes for a varied,
curiously intoxicating and emotionally invigorating listening experience.

Ms Holland, always a talent to be reckoned with, delivers her finest work here.

Highly Recommended.

The second ex-member of the Be Good Tanya's to make a truly beautiful solo album in 2014, though neither sound too country-ish at all. While Frazey Ford went old school soul, Jolie Holland has added a swampy atmosphere and bluesy guitar licks more in keeping with her Anti- label mates like Chuck E Weiss and Tom Waits. Lovely stuff.

I've not heard of Jolie before, but she's supporting Elbow shortly, so thought I would check out her music. I love it!

Absolutely love jolie. Really annoyed can't get tickets for her 'small venue' concert in London this Thursday. Loved her last 2 albums, not sure yet about this one. She seems to be becoming a characature of herself.

HASH(0x8cc46744) out of 5 stars Out Of the Park! 3 Jun. 2014
By JOS - Published on Amazon.com

It's been a couple of weeks since this came out - enough time for its qualities to become apparent. It's terrific! Not unprecedented in Jolie Holland's body of work, it builds, rather, on the strengths of the previous albums, consolidates them with a great confidence and elan, and extends them into some new sonic territory. Yes, the electronic squalls are dramatic and enrich the color of some of the songs, but they're just one element, and it's all in service of the voice, in the end - the free-form band passages untether the voice from the song structures and allow it a new range and latitude. The analog might be how going electric allowed Dylan's voice to go new places and do unprecedented things. Jolie's voice reigns here, it's a lovely instrument. Listen to "On and On," the first track - she alights on the "t" at the end of words with the precision of a bee sting ("let me love you like I wanT") and with the softness of a drop of rain merging into water ("be gentle with my hearT"). The guitars propel it along with their own momentum and urgency - it's all of a piece. The transtion to the second track - the sweet piano - lets you know there will be a range of sounds here, (the album's kind of like a juke-box) - that they're all love songs gives the album a unity, presided over by the commanding vocals. Get this one!

HASH(0x8cc46990) out of 5 stars my favorite album from a stacked 2014. 30 Dec. 2014
By D. Nooter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
An astonishing album. Jolie Holland continues to boast one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in the business, with a jazzy warble that evokes Billie Holiday even as her songwriting is perhaps more reminiscent of early Lucinda Williams. While Holland's previous albums showcased her considerable singing and songwriting talents, however, they provided little warning to prepare one for the force of nature that is WINE DARK SEA. The most significant break with the past is her new, seven-piece backing band, which recorded many of the album's songs live. Where Holland's previous effort, PINT OF BLOOD, was grounded by cool, jazzy guitar accompaniment by the always-classy Marc Ribot, the new album sets Holland's vocals against a maelstrom of raucous sound and fury that at its most bacchanalian evokes the Velvet Underground, as on the excellent "Dark Days." But the album is far from one-dimensional, moving through numerous moods and styles of jazzy blues. For example, the lovely "First Sign of Spring" is perhaps Holland's most beautiful ballad since "Mexican Blue" from 2006's SPRINGTIME CAN KILL YOU, whereas album-closer "Waiting for the Sun" emerges from the darkness to showcase Holland at her uplifting best. Other standouts include "Saint Dymphna" and Holland's soulful reading of Joe Tex's "The Love You Save." But the album is a winner from start to finish. My favorite album of the year, and I'm really surprised at the lack of attention this one received.

I really like what's going on here with Jolie's music. I have always enjoyed her music, but this recording seems a little more daring and a bold move at exploring other musical influences I haven't seen before. If you like Jolie's voice, just buy it and enjoy a new experience of it.
