Would have got 5* if the Blu-ray quality was remastered, as it is it's average.
Film is great tho, good score, great acting, if a tad "American" & gung-ho.
Along with "Lord of War" - This is Cage at his best.

After his heroics during the 'Solomon Island' campaign, 'Sergeant Joe Enders'
who had to recover from injuries sustained is determined to return to active
service, even persuading a nurse to help him fool the medics to do so.
the 'Japanese' have broken every code the U.S. military have used.
they come up with the idea of using the ancient 'Navajo' language needing
'Navajo' conscripts to use the code ........Wind-talking'
'Joe Enders' is assigned a Windtalker 'Private Ben Yahzee' with a mission of
keeping his charge safe and out of enemy hands at 'all costs' protecting the
code.
The sergeant doesn't do friendship............until....
a terrific and well made war-drama..........realistic, action packed, inspired
by a true story.
there are always 'new films' to watch, '2013' is shaping up to be a great year
for new releases.
the slightly older 'Gems' tend to be pushed to the back of the shelf as new
films are collected.
I think we tend to forget just how good many of the 'let's say -a little older'
movies really are.
it's worth taking time out to, like I am trying to do, to revisit some of these,
it's easy to forget them with so many promising new releases.

Nicolas Cage is a US marine nco ordered to protect a code talker in WW2, also ordered to kill the code talker if he is going to be captured to protect the code. Interesting twist on the usual war movie but that makes it very interesting.

There's a quote on the box of this DVD claiming that this is 'one of the best war movies of all time'. I was ready to pour scorn on such a bold claim, but actually, I don't think that's too far off the truth. It's not perfect, but I can't give 4.5 stars, so 5 it is.

The plot involves Nicolas Cage's tough, mentally tortured sergeant being required to protect a code that is part of the Navajo language and is embodied by a native speaker of the language. We follow the two men and their comrades through several battles as the US Marine Corps makes its way across Saipan against entrenched and fearsome opposition.

There are a couple of negatives, such as the slightly irrelevant sub-plot relating to a nurse who tended Cage's character earlier in the war, the occasional resort to cliché, and some pretty unbelievable stuff during some of the battle sequences. But none of these negatives really detracts from the quality of the film overall.

Those battle sequences are viscerally terrifying, and should leave the viewer, as they did me, in no doubt about the horrors of war, and eternally grateful to those who fought and died in WW2. The film also develops the relationships between the men without quite ever becoming too mawkish or sentimental - although there is just enough of the latter to leave you feeling moved. The film tells a good story about a little-known aspect of the war, with good characters and excellent acting. A fine film indeed.

The DVD itself had slightly dodgy sound - I had to turn the volume up a fair bit. There are a number of special features, which look like they might be pretty good if you like that sort of thing - I don't particularly, so I haven't watched them.
