This book is the first comprehensive account of Holman Hunt's work. It starts with a succinct introduction, giving an overview of his life and work which can be recommended to anyone, whether a newcomer to the Pre-Raphaelites, or an aficionado. The book then gives full details of all his paintings and drawings. It is full of fascinating insights and new information, based on detailed research into his life and a close reading of all the beautifully painted fine details in his pictures. The book is a pleasure to handle, elegantly designed with masses of attractive colour reproductions which do justice to Hunt's genius with vivid colour. Hunt was always trying something new and his paintings are full of meaning, expressive but also visually rich. It is a revelation to see the variety of work Hunt produced in addition to the well known works such as the Scapegoat and The Shadow of Death.

A very well written and highly informative catalogue on the tremendous output of W.H.Hunt which is brilliantly and beautifully illustrated throughout.
It was purchased as a birthday treat and it has not disappointed. What an incredibly gifted and creative artist Holman hunt was.
Judith Bronkhurst has packed this catalogue with a tremendous amount of fascinating detail on his life and art. I'm still only part way through so cannot add more detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating 18 Nov. 2012

Format: Hardcover
This Catalogue Raisonne consists of two large books in a slipcase. The first covers the artist's paintings. All the paintings that aren't lost (quite a few, to my surprise) are depicted in colour and in decent size, some even covering a whole page. There's information on when and under which circumstances the painting was created, there's provenance, some interpretation, background etc. This book is a sheer pleasure. The second book covers sketches, drawings, watercolours, studies, as well as frames designed by Hunt and a few props for his paintings that have been preserved. In general, the images are mostly small, a majority is in black and white only, and quite a few that the author considers 'lesser' works aren't shown at all, but only described. The reader gets the same information on provenance etc. as for the paintings. So on the one hand, I appreciate being able to see so many of Hunt's not so well known or accessible works at all. On the other hand, I would definitely have appreciated them more in colour (those that are in colour show just how fantastic his watercolours etc. are), complete and in a nice size. That being said, I still enjoy the Catalogue Raisonne a lot and am very happy it exists. I wouldn't give it five stars, however. Lastly I found the last few pages in book 2 rather interesting since it shows several paintings in their original frames designed by Hunt. You usually don't get to see that combination in books, and I find it quite fascinating how the frames complement the paintings. All in all: Well worth having if you like this painter or the Pre-Raphaelite era in general.
