I've been a fan of William for many years, but came to these books as an adult. They are very definitely the sort of books that you enjoy and appreciate more as an adult, especially if you have sons! The language is quite complex and difficult for children, I would say, and the nuances in some of the things the adults say would go over the heads of young ones. As a mother of one son, and as someone who grew up in a mostly female world, this book has been an eye opener regarding the world of boys! There is no malicious intent on the part of the outlaws, they get themselves into scrapes just acting from the best of intentions, but fortunately they always manage to put things right, or face some punishment meted out by their fathers. I can understand to a certain extent why they have been withdrawn from print, but adults should read every one they can get their hands on. Very, very enjoyable, and William the Detective is one of the best in the whole series.
