Review
'This book is like the wild, strange forest it describes. It is full of suspense and danger and frightening things the world has never seen, and once I stepped inside I never wanted to leave' -- LEMONY SNICKET, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events
'A beautiful object and a beautiful read. One half fairy tale, one half coming-of-age story, one half unrepentantly gorgeous work of art, this book is overflowing with gifts' -- JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER
'An irresistible, atmospheric adventure - richly imagined and richly rewarding' -- TRENTON LEE STEWART, author of The Mysterious Benedict Society series
'Dark and whimsical, with a true and uncanny sense of otherworldliness, WILDWOOD is the heir to a great tradition of stories of wild childhood adventure. It snatched me up and carried me off into a world I didn't want to leave' -- MICHAEL CHABON
'A haunting and beautiful adventure, as well as a rare instance of an almost supernaturally seamless collaboration between writer and illustrator. A brilliant book, about the magic that fringes reality, about the intensity of childhood, about friendship, and the wonders of the wilderness. You are holding a very precious thing' -- MATT HAIG, author of SHADOW FOREST
'A book children and adults alike will treasure' --Digital Artist
Book Description
About the Author
As a child, Carson Ellis loved exploring the woods, drawing and nursing wounded animals back to health. As an adult, little has changed - except she is now the acclaimed illustrator of several books for children, including Lemony Snicket's The Composer is Dead, Dillweed's Revenge by Florence Parry Heide, and The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Colin and Carson live with their son, Hank, in Portland, Oregon, quite near the Impassable Wilderness.

About the author

Colin Meloy is the charismatic lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists, a highly celebrated (and uncommonly literary) band that has sold in excess of 1 million records. Colin has been recognized as much for his musical abilities—his ear for inventive and timeless melodies and his lilting vocals—as he has been for his unmatched lyrical prowess. Crafting each song as a vivid, imaginative story unto itself, he’s become one of the most distinctive and appreciated voices of our time. WILDWOOD marks Colin’s debut as children’s author. Prue is a young girl with a much younger brother, Mac, who she takes on her trips to the city. One day, Mac is kidnapped in a very strange way and Prue gives chase. But she enters the Impenetrable Wilderness of Wildwood a place very different and at the same time very similar to her hometown of Portland.
Again, the story itself is a quite classic children's adventure, but Colin Meloy has a style of writing that keeps the story moving. It never feels as if an adult is giving his interpretation on the actions of children. Rather, Meloy succeeds in writing believable children, with the right questions and motivations during their adventure through something unknown.
There are a great many children's books that have these qualities, but what I especially liked about Wildwood was the way in which characters are portrayed. The starting point of the story doesn't coincide with a journey of self-discovery that ends with all protagonists becoming Hero's and all antagonists realising the wrongness of their wicked ways. Characters develop in a very natural manner in which all of them are interesting, with both admirable qualities and foibles.
The illustrations are well done and interesting enough to be used during a good story telling session. They fit well in with the atmosphere of the book and add to the story without diminishing the fun of using your imagination.
Summarizing, Wildwood is a must read for lovers of a good adventure book and I think I can safely recommend it for anyone who wants to read this to their children at bedtime.
