Very interesting to read of life in London for very ordinary people in Victorian times. Especially by an author of that period. He is able to describe real situations in real time. He is a compassionate writer and digs deep into life for the lower classes. The detail could not I think be written by a modern author. You really get to feel the harshness of life for people trying to survive in a society when an honest day's work is just not obtainable for many and how difficult it was for many to get just one foot on the ladder. With no benefit system or national health service life was hard for these people. Of course there were many rogues but for decent people down on their luck through illness or unemployment life was incredibly hard and the author attempts to clarify the unfairness of much of it. He must have contributed hugely to a better way eventually of helping these people by his concise descriptions of conditions for people trying to lead a better life.

One of the best books I have read on Victorian London life. Explained many things I never knew before. Very varied and witty,
A few typos but nothing to complain about.
If you are interested in the poor of Victorian London you MUST read this book.

YOU MUST READ THIS if you want to know what life was like for the poorer in society. James Greenwood wrote with insight, gained from first hand knowledge, and with such compassion for the least fortunate. He also warned his readers, especially those in authority, of the evils of some beadles and the unfairness of systems in workhouses and prisons which favoured the least honest and further punished honest men and women out of work and destitute through no fault of their own.One of the most charming and surprising chapters described the care of little children in Great Ormond Street. I had never imagined the children being given toys and picture books whilst staying there. For the poorest children, it must have seemed like heaven to come from filthy home conditions, to a place with their own cot or bed with clean sheets and kind doctors and nurses.

Greenwood needed no escort to visit the East End which included visiting Ratcliffe Highway. His description of women in the dance halls will never be beaten they are gems.

I didn't get on with this book, as I found it rather dry and dull to read. Unfortunately not a page turner for me, I am afraid
