Another major feature of the book is its description of the history of the natural history of the Marches, including many biographical details of the key naturalists involved, and a discussion of the social millieux that lead to them taking up the study of nature.
In between these two strands of thought, however, there can be found descriptions of some of the key sites for seeing nature in the Marches, and descriptions and lists of interesting species to be seen there.
The book is attractively laid out, and well illustrated with photographs both of the habitats, and the organisms under discussion; these include some high quality photographs of many of the smaller organisms mentioned.
The writing is generally lucid and well thought out, only marred by the very occasional repetition of a point.
In summary, this is not a conventional book of what to find where, nor a coffee table book of pictures. It is a thought provoking book, centred on a particular geographical area, but with a much more general message. It is not a reference book to dip into, but a book to read from cover to cover. Disclaimer: I gave suggestions and comments while the book was being written, and several of my wife's photos are in it.
