Product description

Review

"Brimful of can-do how-to spirit, get-up-and-go energy, and love for Britain's wild places. Inspiring, passionate and practical." Robert Macfarlane "Phoebe sets out instead to explore our greatest wildernesses and enjoy them simply by spending time within them. Wilderness Weekends offers a refreshingly different set of ideas for any would-be adventurer." Sir Ranulph Fiennes 'Includes tips such as what kit to take and when to go.' The Independent on Sunday 'This book reveals some of the best places in Britain for wild camping. Let's hope it doesn't prove too popular, or those wilderness spots could get a little overcrowded...' The Sunday Post (Dundee) 'Makes the most of your weekends in the wilder parts of Britain.' The Bookseller 'Offering hardy travellers wonderful ways to enjoy the UK's dramatic landscapes.' Metro 'Filled with ideas for short, budget escapes in the UK.' Wanderlust Travel Magazine 'This is a useful guide, full of suggestions on camping spots and graced by dramatic pictures.' Scot Outdoors 'A lovely book with the intention to inspire even the most timid of people to spend a night outdoors.' TGO - The Great Outdoors 'Aimed at encouraging people to head out for wild camping weekends around Britain.' Countryside Magazine 'Each entry comes with glorious photos, a map and stories about the history and folklore of the area, as well as practical information for planning a trip. It will make you want to start ticking them off.' Adventure Travel Magazine '26 adventures covering most of Britain's rugged reaches, a table perfectly laid out ready for people to feast on.' TGO - The Great Outdoors

About the Author

Phoebe Smith's love of dramatic landscapes has taken her on walking and backpacking adventures all around the world - from wild camping on the Scottish islands, sleeping under a swag in the Australian outback and watching the Northern Lights from a wigwam above the Arctic Circle. She's enjoyed snowshoeing in the Swiss Alps, scrambling in Wadi Rum and canyon walking in the USA. But of all the places she's been it's the UK that holds a special place in her heart and she is adamant that you don't need to travel far to have an adventure.

By Squirr-El HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 23 Nov. 2015
Format: Paperback
This 240-page book - the 1st edition of March 2015 - is a colourful and enthusiastic collection of 26 weekend hikes around Great Britain. It is not a standard Brandt guide, in that is printed on glossy paper and is full of colour photographs illustrating each of the hikes. The author has investigated the nooks and crannies of the countryside featured here. This book is for people who want to see the ‘real’ county, and not just the well-trodden tourist routes. There are three sections, one each for England (8 routes), Scotland (12) and Wales (6 - all but one in North Wales, he says mournfully in a South Welsh accent). Each weekend hike can be extended if you have more time and energy.

The Contents are -
P007: Introduction
P010: Wilderness Weekends: the essentials
P023: Using this guide
P024: A word about the site selection
P026: England (8 sections)
P086: Wales (6)
P130: Scotland (12)
P239: Index

Well put together with lots of good guidance about preparation. So many trips to make. I can't wait for better weather as I am a fair weather camper.
As Phoebe says "Enjoy rather than endure". Best tip of all!

I've been on one trip with it and it was great. There were a couple of things that I'd take extra after my first trip but it was good. Can't wait to go on another trip but am going to wait until the weather improves.

I am normally a fan of Phoebe Smith's books, but this one has let her down in places.

Although the contents and ideas are good and interesting (although it is a bit of a re-hash of "Extreme Sleeps") , there areas which are just plain wrong and give the impression the book has been assembled at a desk in a publishing house in a city, rather than from "getting out there" and doing the leg work herself. An example of this is in section 5 (starting page 58) where a walk in Mosedale (near Haweswater) is described - lovely walk, nice description etc... except the two-page photo spread that accompanies it on page 62 is the wrong Mosedale! There are several Mosedales in the Lakes and this isn't the one being described in the book - anyone visiting Haweswater and expecting to see that view of Scafell Pike is going to be very disappointed.

So it looks like the author (Phoebe Smith) has written the words, the publishers (Bradt) have used some pretty pictures from a stockpile of photographs (Stewart Smith Photography) and nobody has checked it's correct before it's been printed and flogged to the public.

Phoebe - your books are normally very good - check the manuscript before publishing, please.

Come on folks, you can do better.

What a fantastic book! 26 mini adventures from the top to the bottom of the UK with perfect amount of detail and information to get you going. Gorgeous photographs and loads of practical advice make this super readable. The best 'adventure' book I've bought - an instant classic.

I have read the previous book extreme sleeps to my daughters, which they enjoyed. I have plenty of books from guys like Ray Mears, but the girls are far more interested in someone they can relate to. Because of the strength of the previous book, I had this one on pre order. When it arrived I was very pleased with the content and layout, it is a very well put together and informative book.

Hi,

Please can someone replace this book? The pages have fallen out already (I have photos to share) it was a present for my boyfriend as we were hoping to take these away over the weekends camping but just started reading this tonight at home and all the pages have started to fall out! Please advise as this is poor quality

Thanks,

Danielle
