About the Author

Joe O'Leary is thirty-six and lives in a cottage on the Wiltshire/Dorset border with his wife Clare, a number of dogs and cats and an ever-growing collection of various bags of sticks and twigs. He has been a soldier, carpenter, furniture maker and cafe owner but the one thing that has remained constant throughout his life is his passion for the great outdoors and an overwhelming desire to learn everything there is to know about self-reliance in the wilderness. He runs his own school, Wilderness Survival Skills.

Is this the best and most comprehensive survival book in the world? No. But what it is is a very good starter (one of the best I have read). It is not written by someone claiming to be an SAS god or an overcommercialised TV personality (who use ghost writers anyhow). This is a book written by someone real, honest and humble and who - above all - just loves the woods and nature. This respect and admiration for our natural surroundings comes to live in every page and this is what makes this book so much pleasure to read. At times I wished for that extra layer of detail ... stopping at sentences such as 'and you could also make this from that' but not really explaining how leaves you wanting for more. It would be great if Joe wrote another book for the intermediary.
All in all, one of my favourite survival guides (and I have read a lot of them) because it is so practical, down to earth and it works! The drawings are clear, much more so than some (TV channel sponsored) books with a lot of 'fashion photography' and 'product placement!
This is as real as it gets. No nonsense, no commercialisation and a fun and funny read by a good writer.

A good guide to survival, should you find you had to live of the land, lots of tips on various subjects like how to find and clean water, how to build a shelter, how to make fire, and ways to cook using the fire different ways of forming a fire. I liked the way the book was written, I would recommend it to anyone that has an interest in this subject, I bought the book for my kindle but paperback or hardback would be good

The book is great! I've been doing Survival for a few years - solo and leading camps, pity I didn't have this book at the beginning. Joe O'leary is informative, easy to read and incredibly funny. I highly recommend this book!

This book is excellent with a wry sense of humour thrown in for good measure. The structure as a manual is clear, logical and concise. Evidently lots of experience has been distilled into c300 pages of well written dummy through to expert guidance.

I met some of his school tutors at the Bushcraft show and they were just as well informed and operated with the same humorous deft skill displayed by Joe in his book.

Read it, practice & practice again in a "safe-space", review then go out and do it for real.

I would give every Scout/Explorer (maybe even Cub) a copy and know they'd have a better chance of having a safe, warm, dry, well nourished & watered camp.

Excellent read - informative, amusing and really well laid out. Everything explained in an easy to follow and very interesting way. Can be read through from cover to cover without being heavy going or can be read in chapters picked specifically about certain items of interest. Excellent value for money and I hope Joe O'Leary writes more books as he really is a talented author.

Whether you're a full on prepper or just someone like me who just likes to potter around in the back garden this book is full of practical advice. Written by someone who doesn't take himself or the subject too seriously.

I was bought this book by my mum as I have always had an interest in the outdoors. Normally the books she buys me are a bit boring but this was brilliant and I have already read it through twice! It gives all the information you need to survive and is very interesting to read. Have been making many more trip to the countryside and really enjoyed feeling like I know more about the great outdoors! Have even taught my friends a thing or two! Just read he does survival courses too? Will hopefully save up to go on one to put my new skills into practise.

I've very much enjoyed reading this book, its not so dense as to be dull but is clear and in depth enough for both beginners and many more experienced outdoors people to take something away from this. Its comprehensive in its range of subject matters (within bush craft) though if you want a cold instruction manual this is not for you, it is more in the form of an instructive book on bush craft. This guy owes a heavy debt to Mors Kochansky but that is no bad thing. The thing I liked about this book is it gave me a little taste of the outdoors when I had to be indoors, in the city and gave me one or two ideas for the next time I hit the countryside!
