About the Author
Joe O'Leary is thirty-six and lives in a cottage on the Wiltshire/Dorset border with his wife Clare, a number of dogs and cats and an ever-growing collection of various bags of sticks and twigs. He has been a soldier, carpenter, furniture maker and cafe owner but the one thing that has remained constant throughout his life is his passion for the great outdoors and an overwhelming desire to learn everything there is to know about self-reliance in the wilderness. He runs his own school, Wilderness Survival Skills.

All in all, one of my favourite survival guides (and I have read a lot of them) because it is so practical, down to earth and it works! The drawings are clear, much more so than some (TV channel sponsored) books with a lot of 'fashion photography' and 'product placement!
This is as real as it gets. No nonsense, no commercialisation and a fun and funny read by a good writer.
I met some of his school tutors at the Bushcraft show and they were just as well informed and operated with the same humorous deft skill displayed by Joe in his book.
Read it, practice & practice again in a "safe-space", review then go out and do it for real.
I would give every Scout/Explorer (maybe even Cub) a copy and know they'd have a better chance of having a safe, warm, dry, well nourished & watered camp.

This is a great introduction to the skills required for surviving in the wilderness. Well written. My only gripe is that there are not enough illustrations or photos. Read morePublished 6 months ago by Alan Lau
