4.25 stars: WILD WOLF is the sixth full length instalment in Jennifer Ashley’s contemporary, adult, paranormal Shifters Unbound series focusing on the shifters and their mates from Shiftertown, USA. Like many shifter storylines, Jennifer Ashley’s shifters are persecuted and discriminated against by the humans but the humans have help in their attempts to bring the shifters under control. This is wolf alpha Graham McNeil and the human female Misty’s story.

The storyline follows Graham and Misty as they fall victim to those trying to take control of the shifters. When Misty’s floral business comes under attack, she calls Graham for help only to discover that they have been drawn into a trap where powerful forces are at work. Not only does the government try to control the shifters but, so too, does another supernatural species looking to take back what they lost in the past.

Jennifer Ashley continues to pull the reader into a story where the collared shifters become pawns in a world run by the governments who have perpetrated the persecution of the shifters because of their differences and similarities. We watch as discrimination sets the tone for an entire species because they are misunderstood and present too many unanswered questions.

WILD WOLF brings the Shifter Unbound series on the cusp of a new direction with the integration of a potentially new hybrid species and a war with a supernatural power who have slowly found their way into the shifter population. Many of the previous storyline characters play pivotal roles throughout the story as well as the introduction of future storyline characters and a new supernatural power not previously known to the readers.

Jennifer Ashley has written a suspense-filled and revealing storyline.

I would have given this 4 stars but for the so called hero. Graham McNeil was always going to be difficult to like and unfortunately, in as much as I like Jennifer Ashley's books, I am unable to give this more than a 3. Graham was never nice and personable and love didn't change that fact for me. I actually hoped he was one of those characters who got killed off in a nasty fight.

The official blurb for this tale isn't entirely right - yes, Graham McNeil's clan of unhappy lupines wants him to mate with one of their own females, and yes, Misty is sort of his girlfriend, but she doesn't really have a crisis of her own, as ****************SOME MAY CONSIDER THE REST OF THIS REVIEW TO CONTAIN SPOILERS******************* there's a dastardly plan afoot by an enemy of the Shifters, and not a human one at that, and she's only the unwitting pawn who's being used to draw Graham into a trap...

Most of the novel is taken up with fighting that enemy, and as usual we get to see some of the shifters from other packs coming together for the greater good of shifters. We see felines, lupines, half-human/half fae, dark fae...and something more, all fighting the enemy using their differing strengths. Andrea and Sean are around a fair bit in the tale, as her fae-human mix is needed for healing, and we get to see glimpses of Eric, Jace, Liam, Dylan, Tiger (who's about to become a father) and possibly some other pack leaders whose names have been 'dropped' into the tale as potential leads in future books in the series.

The twin orphaned cubs Kyle and Matt are a hoot, providing a bit of comic relief, as well as being outed as an unknown species of shifter, that may well be key in the survival of their race. Misty herself is a steel magnolia, a perfect match for Graham, who's revealed as pretty much a caveman in terms of boyfriend material, yet not at all like the guy who was introduced a few books back as a near-baddie. Seeing him with the twins and with his nephew Dougal, is what made Misty see that there's more to him than the shouty, blustery, over-protective male than meets the eye.
