The tale pretty much mirrors the blurb, with (brief) sort-of similarity to Ella Frank's Logan and Tate tales. It does run pretty close to the blurb, so there's no point repeating that, but here are my thoughts on it:
There are a few things that make it a 4* read and not a 5* one: the author got muddled up with verb tenses at times, so I had 'uwot?' moments where I had to go back and re-read to make sense/also, the name of the character whose POV each chapter was narrated in was so small, that I didn't initially notice this and struggled with who was speaking; this also happened when she changed POV mid-chapter/there is not much sex in the tale, and what there is happens sort of perfunctorily - because it's a MM tale and it's expected. I needed more passion, more down and dirty words, more scenes, more eroticism. I mean, they'd both been into each other for over 7 years, so the passion should have been off the charts.Read more ›
Always a sports fan, and a diehard romantic, this new series was inevitably on my radar. And I was delighted by the read, and the promise of what is to come.
Although the premise is not a new one, it is really well executed. The uncertainty, the lack of freedom to be open, the issues of being in a profession that is nervous of MM relationships all combine to give the two men, both in the sport, a lot to consider. By giving the reader both POVs Ms Johnson carefully walks around the minefield, developing a believable, deeply satisfying read.
I shall be looking out for the next in the series, because this was a winning start for me.

This was such a sweet story. A bit of gay for you too.
I enjoyed this story, but for me it was too sweet. There was a few twists and turns and things the men had to get over, but nothing that was too unexpected for me or turbulent.
The writing was really excellent though so although there wasn't a whole lot of suspense, I found myself quickly reading the book.
I really did love Sean and the battles he went through for/with Mason. He was my favorite character and I really related to him. His life was one way and that's all he ever wanted, but when Mason came out to him, everything changed... even if it wasn't all at once.
Such a great, sweet book. Only reason it's not 5 stars for me is that it was just too sweet for my personal taste.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
Sean and Mason have been best friends since rooming together their rookie year in Major League Baseball. Several years later, Sean plays for the Milwaukee Mavericks while Mason plays for Chicago. Going through a messy divorce, Mason turns to his best friend, the man he has had a crush on for years, for support.
I loved both of these men. Sean, who has has lived so carefully in the closet for so many years and Mason who is thinking about his sexuality for the first time in a very long time. Relationships are difficult for any professional athlete, but for gay athletes, secrecy makes their lives even more complicated.
The supporting characters add warmth and complexity to this story. Sean and Mason are surrounded by some great people. Mason’s parents are brilliant, Jason and Eric are great friends and even the Maverick’s management comes through for Sean.Read more ›
It's a heartwarming story of best friends becoming lovers and how to deal with life on the road as a player . Decisions to be made , trust needed , support by friends and family . Once they have this everything else should be easy !
It's a beautifully written story that I actually enjoyed considering my lack of baseball knowledge. I can't wait for Curve Ball .
I've always turned the other way when it comes to stories with baseball as a major element ONLY because I'm clueless on the subject but Sloan has proved to me that I don't need to understand baseball to throughly enjoy a really good story . It's not the content , it's how it's written that makes you keep turning those pages until the end .
Thank you Sloan for showing me that I don't need to know much about baseball to enjoy a truly good read.
Well done . You've hit a home run with this one ( see what I did there !) . Bring on Curve Ball !!

I did enjoy the story for the most part, unfortunately I found the way the author kept switching view points between the characters confusing and difficult to read.Published 8 months ago by rose
Unskilled writing, with too much telling, and not enough showing. The narrative was broken up with the protagonists' every thought and motivation. Read morePublished 10 months ago by :-)
Enjoyed the book.
It has been done before but was still enjoyable. Hoping book 2 is as good as the reviews didn't seem great. But will give it a go.

Extremely slow to get going, I found the book to be boring in its constant switching from Mason's & then Sean's point of view. No real passion. Quite disappointing reallyPublished 21 months ago by M. Gregory
