Review

Praise for Ewart Hutton’s GOOD PEOPLE:
'GOOD PEOPLE's corkscrew plot skewers small-town hypocrisy with a wry smile and a sniff of disgust. An entertaining debut with more stings in the tail than a bag of scorpions.' VAL McDERMID

‘a terrific novel that blows a fresh breath in to crime fiction … as if Ian Rankin had been transported to Wales’

‘A cross between Frost and Hot Fuzz … one of the most interesting and enjoyable crime books I’ve read for a long time’ reviewingtheevidence.com

There is a good mystery here with twists and turns to keep it interesting. The book is well-written and carries some good insights and a bit of wit.

Our protagonist is both a rebel and likeable, although you do wonder, at times, why he insists on continuing when he is told to stop, and why he receives so little support when he appears to be on to something. I did struggle a little with the police reporting lines in trying to work out who was calling the shots for what. But the intrigue levels and story structure meant the issue didn't become too big a distraction.

This is probably not as strong as the two prequels, but a Hutton novel beats much of what is out there in this genre. 9/10

I like Glyn Capaldi and his adventures in the wilds of Wales. He is a maverick whose behaviour stretches credulity but he's funny and human and that makes for a good read. In Wild People he is recovering from a car accident which badly injured him and killed the suspect, 18 year old Jessie Bullock, he had in the car with him. Capaldi, alone, doesn't believe it was an accident and sets out to investigate whilst on sick leave. Needless to say mayhem ensues with a rising body count and enough twists to keep the most exacting reader interested.
I thought it was a good read as it kept me interested and turning the pages.

A very good book but the weakest of the series so far. The story, plot lines and descriptions are excellent as before. However there is too much repetition of the detective hood winking the young, the old, colleagues, criminals.... This brings the reader out of the story to question and thereby reduce the positive reading experience. If possible I would have given the book 3.5
