Out on parole after 8 years inside, Bill (Charlie Creed-Miles) returns home to find his now 11 and 15-year old sons, Jimmy (Sammy Williams) and Dean (Will Poulter), abandoned by their mother and fending for themselves. Dean reluctantly forces his Dad to stay, but when Jimmy finds himself in trouble with Bill’s old drug-dealing mates, Bill has to decide what kind of Dad he really wants to be – a good one or a free one…

By far the best film of 2012.
A quality film from top-to-bottom; this is a genuinely warming film about family & the role a father plays to his children. We see the metaphoric & literal change in Bill as he starts providing for & defending his family despite having never known it himself. All of the cast provide excellent performances, especially the kids who have such a large percentage of screen-time and all of the villains are played by recognisable characters from the UK cinema scene (notably Neil Maskell from Football Factory).Read more ›
The father who has led an irresponsible life gradually realises that just being a biological father counts for nothing with the 2 boys.Prodded by social services who think the boys will be better off in care anyway, he starts to take on the responsibility of being a father. It is really excellent acting to see the inch by inch small improvements he tackles, and the impact of this on the boys,as they stumble towards some kind of coming together. However the background of criminality is constantly a threat and rears its ugly head continuously and disruptively. The father realises that he has to "save" his sons from a life such as he has lived until then.Uneducated and limited, he does what he does best even if it may be his undoing ultimately, and places himself between his boys and the criminals seeking to exploit them. This is a gem of a film.
Charlie Creed-Miles gives the performance of a lifetime and Will Poulter is superb as the son trying to hold things together. There are some great cameos but these add to,not overshadow, the central performances.
The final scenes culminate into a brilliant finale, and Fletcher keeps the excitement and pace right until the end.
Quite simply it is British cinema at the top of it's game,a great film...see it as soon as you get the chance.
