Product Description

Product Description

The first major series to reveal the wildlife, wild places and extraordinary people of the vast Arabian peninsula, Wild Arabia takes a surprising and beguiling journey into a fascinating region.

1. Sand, Wind and Stars

In the beautiful wilderness that is the largest sand desert in the world, Wild Arabia reveals extraordinary wildlife, from the mythical oryx to deadly scorpions; travels with the Bedouins and their camels and encounters mysterious ancient civilisations.

2. The Jewel of Arabia

In Oman’s Dhofar Mountains, cameras capture the first ever HD footage of the Arabian leopard, while its offshore waters reveal humpback whales, turtles, vast shoals of fish and the key to annual rainstorms which briefly turn a barren land into a green paradise.

3. Shifting Sands

Finally, the series considers the people’s fast-changing relationship with nature. Traditional camel races are ridden by robot jockeys and falcons are trained with radio-controlled planes, but wildlife is also protected; tagged dugongs swim in the warm Gulf waters and whale sharks are kept safe in no-take zones.

Beautifully shot with an amazing array of wildlife and fascinating stories, Wild Arabia reveals the remarkable connections between the nature, people and landscape of this astonishing land.

This was a wonderful BBC series and now on dvd. It is a wonderful intimate view and insight into the lives of the nomadic people of Arabia and the stunning wildlife and how the two are intertwined. The respect that it is given to the wildlife in the region and the efforts that are being done to preserve this. The filming is superb and content that has never been filmed before. I was captured from the beginning of the series and would recommend this as outstanding viewing, not to be missed.

'Wild Arabia' is a classic BBC Earth / BBC Bristol Natural History Unit production: stunning imagery, state-of-the-art filming (e.g. in a jerboa's burrow as it scurries to evade a hungry fox; night and ultra-violet photography to reveal a scorpion's UV sensitivity; beautiful aerial shots of a herd of oryx crossing vast expanses of dunes), appropriately local and moving background music; wry and unobtrusive commentary by Alexander Siddig, and so on. There's also an entertaining extra about the hazards of filming and the bond that grew between the film crew and the locals they met. I've lived in Arabia for over 20 years and it even opened my eyes to the variety of fascinating creatures and their struggle for survival. My Emirati students also love watching it...

this title really should be available on blu-ray to make the most of the superb photography. Great to see a series about a lesser known area though, and good footage in episode 2 of the elusive and extremely rare Arabian Leopard. The third episode is very different in character to the first two, more about the economic development of the area than the wildlife but is interesting nevertheless.

UPDATE: this title IS now available on blu-ray from Amazon as a Dutch import in English with optional Dutch subtitles -
BBC Earth - Wild Arabia [ 2011 ] [ Blu-Ray ].

If you have an HD TV and haven't yet got a blu-ray player I strongly recommend that you do for the improved quality. (They also play and upscale your DVDs). Prices start at around £50 for the player and nearly all BBC wildlife series from the last 10 years (since Planet Earth) are available, often for about half the price of new releases. If the necessary HDMI cable is not included you can buy them very cheaply online.

If you do want a blu-ray, the remastered version of the classic movie Lawrence of Arabia (Blu-ray + UV Copy) [1962][Region Free] is excellent. There are also some very good BBC wildlife blurays included in the documentary section of Amazon's 2 for £10 or 3 for £17 promotions.

The wild series from the BBC have been excellent; caught the original broadcast of this on BBC2 quite by accident half way through the series. This series in particular highlighting the rich diversity of wildlife in this often supposed barren landscape. Wasn't disappointed with the complete series - excellent.

Beautifully filmed and enlightening about wild life and an environment both natural and manmade. The beauty of these documentaries is that they give a picture of a world that will be vastly different in the not to different future.

A great series, although it does appear on TV every now and again, it's good to have them on demand. It's in HD, and the quality is undeniably excellent. It's a brilliant insight into the wildlife of Arabia, and it also explains how globalisation and other things have affected Arabia, and what Arabian countries are doing about this. Geography teachers would have an easy lesson showing that to their students - it'd be a great educational tool.
