I really loved this book, Lowdy the leading lady is strong, intelligent, witty and doesn't suffer fools gladly, especially if they are men, which often the most foolish are! These traits are admired and respected in modern day women but as the book is set a good 500 years ago, she often finds herself having to disguise her feelings and instinctive responses. The lady has gumption, something I love and admire in many of my own friends, so I really found myself investing in her life.

The story is a murder mystery with some good twists and turns, and gentle humor. I can honestly say I didn't know what was going to happen at the end, and didn't even have the final ending on my radar! To say this is a great holiday read is true, but doesn't do it the justice it deserves. Its also rather philosophical, dealing with many of the emotions of both life and death in a very real way. It is also written beautifully, conjuring up vivid pictures of both the time and the place it is set.

All in all a 5 star read, I'll be recommending it to all my friends!

I enjoyed reading this first novel. It is an interesting thriller of a story written with great humanity and from a feminist perspective. The scholarship is impressive but does not get in the way of the story. There are occasional asides discussing Cornish history and tradition; female concerns and the difference between the male and female view point - which add interest to the unfolding story.
There are areas in the text which made me realise the value of impartial editing - some repetitions and typos.
However I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the historical novel, or who would like to know more about Cornwall just before the Dissolution.
I hope the second edition has a map

Really enjoyable read this - as a 'foreigner' (I'm from London!) I really enjoyed the sense of place and time, with a good plot, terrific atmosphere and some lovely turns of phrase. Thank you.

The book was well researched and the characterisation believable. A map may have been useful to get the 'lie of the land' but this may be because I know the town as it now is and was trying to visualise my town as it would have been in the 16 century.
