Can't wait for the next one !!
The Twin Cities are full of police to cope with expected demonstrations and of Secret Service staff to protect the politicians. An efficient gang of ruthless robbers flies and drives in to perform a well-planned series of attacks on carriers of large sums of campaign cash in various top hotels. But their final planned heist remains unclear until the end. It is referred to as `the hotel'.
The gang seriously considers retirement. The odds against them increase with DNA recoverable from dandruff, CCTV cameras everywhere, detectable mobile phones and fingerprint matches in 10 minutes. They plan well and fight hard and smart to stay one step ahead of the police.
The second story line concerns a ghost from Lucas Davenport's past released on parole in a wheelchair and intent on revenge. And the third is about Letty West, another character from earlier Davenport novels, who is about to be the legally adopted daughter of Lucas and his surgeon wife Heather. She is the only weak part of the novel, and only because of the unlikely combination of being 14 and already being a part-time reporter for a local TV-station.
However, she proves to be a riveting character with a mind of her own. This may be the 20th novel with Davenport. Readers know he is well dressed and super rich and driving a Porsche, so the inclusion of a streetwise, ethically strong, but ruthless and quick-thinking teenager is a promise for the future.
Sandford mashes the story lines expertly and twists and turns continue right until the end. Great piece of reading.
The story line is hard-hitting and gritty but in a way that makes you want to keep turning the pages and read on.
Character development is really great too,if you use your imagination you get a sense of time and place and that's the secret that makes the 'prey' books so appealing......the storyline is mostly believable, you can almost imagine these kind of crimes occuring,in fact,i'm pretty sure they do and then the police tactics deployed to apprehend the not-so-nice criminals involved.......or as Lucas Davenport would say,'Lets take them down'.
Entertaining reading with a hard edge, well done JS
