About the Author

Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic writer with his 2006's Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. They continued to work together across the next fifteen year, culminating with smash hit The Wicked + the Divine. Since then he's had the pleasure of creating stories with other artists such as Stephanie Hans (DIE, We Called Them Giants) and Caspar Wijngaard (the current sensation, The Power Fantasy). He has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Immortal X-men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). In a previous life he was an award-winning pop-culture critic. In his current life, he tries to sleep more. He lives in Bath, UK.

Jamie McKelvie is an artist and writer mostly known for his work with Kieron Gillen on comics such as
The Wicked + The Divine, Young Avengers and Phonogram. He is also known for his influential character design work, especially at Marvel Comics, where he designed Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, Loki and many of the Young Avengers.

Outside of comics, he regularly provides artwork for the band Chvrches, and has also worked with Art Brut and Tegan and Sara. He is currently working on his first solo book in over a decade, The Killing Horizon.

Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.

He is working on other things.

In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.

He once played records for DMC to rap over.

Five volumes into #wicdiv and the tension has not alleviated. Persephone is a rogue Goddess with an unclear mission, Urdrr is trying to get everyone to stop focusing on the wrong thing, and Woden is pretending everything is just FINE.

The series is one of the best ever to the point I'm writing this review whilst in a of sleep, because it's so good it HAS TOO be SHARED.

    3.5.

I thought this volume was a little slow and boring but I enjoyed it overall.

The first issue deviates from the usual comic's structure and it's told in a magazine format. There are articles about some of the gods where the gods do photoshoots and give interviews and there's also advertisements where the gods endorse products like phones and cologne. On the one hand, I liked it because it was something different, the pictures were absolutely stunning, I thought it was done very well because the columnists were actually real journalists but on the other hand, I personally don't enjoy reading magazine columns. I didn't enjoy reading the columns and I was looking forward to it ending so I could get the usual comic back. The rest of the volume was what you'd expect from the series. The art in this comic series is probably my favourite out of any series I've ever read. The drawings and the colours are just amazing like they get a 5/5 from me every time. The story was a bit slow and I guess it's just preparing for Phase 2 where I hope some messy stuff hits the fan.

Also The Morrigan is no longer my favourite because of reasons and I don't really like Amaterasu anymore. The only character I do like is Woden...

    I would recommend this series.

One of the most original series out there, though the story is starting to feel a little stretched for me.
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2017
The “new gods” spend a lot of time jostling for position and arguing. There's a lot of talk particularly from Cassandra as they seek a suitable response to the Great Darkness. Many are incredibly self-centred and ignore the others.

Still confusing but the artwork is excellent and well-executed. The volume ends with the obvious consequence that there is more to come, especially as some of the gods near the end of their two-year lives. It's entertaining stuff and I've read enough to want to know how this is all going to finish.

Une des meilleures séries qu'il m'ait été donnée de lire. Le dessin est aussi bon que le scénario. J'attends la suite avec impatience.
