Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.
He is working on other things.
In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.
He once played records for DMC to rap over.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2020Five volumes into #wicdiv and the tension has not alleviated. Persephone is a rogue Goddess with an unclear mission, Urdrr is trying to get everyone to stop focusing on the wrong thing, and Woden is pretending everything is just FINE.
The series is one of the best ever to the point I'm writing this review whilst in a of sleep, because it's so good it HAS TOO be SHARED.

I thought this volume was a little slow and boring but I enjoyed it overall.
The first issue deviates from the usual comic's structure and it's told in a magazine format. There are articles about some of the gods where the gods do photoshoots and give interviews and there's also advertisements where the gods endorse products like phones and cologne. On the one hand, I liked it because it was something different, the pictures were absolutely stunning, I thought it was done very well because the columnists were actually real journalists but on the other hand, I personally don't enjoy reading magazine columns. I didn't enjoy reading the columns and I was looking forward to it ending so I could get the usual comic back. The rest of the volume was what you'd expect from the series. The art in this comic series is probably my favourite out of any series I've ever read. The drawings and the colours are just amazing like they get a 5/5 from me every time. The story was a bit slow and I guess it's just preparing for Phase 2 where I hope some messy stuff hits the fan.
Also The Morrigan is no longer my favourite because of reasons and I don't really like Amaterasu anymore. The only character I do like is Woden...
I would recommend this series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2018One of the most original series out there, though the story is starting to feel a little stretched for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2017The “new gods” spend a lot of time jostling for position and arguing. There's a lot of talk particularly from Cassandra as they seek a suitable response to the Great Darkness. Many are incredibly self-centred and ignore the others.
Still confusing but the artwork is excellent and well-executed. The volume ends with the obvious consequence that there is more to come, especially as some of the gods near the end of their two-year lives. It's entertaining stuff and I've read enough to want to know how this is all going to finish.

The Wicked & The Divine sigue sorprendiendo y este tomo no es menos. Un dibujo perfecto por McKelvie y un guión inmejorable por Gillen. Muy recomendable.

Une des meilleures séries qu'il m'ait été donnée de lire. Le dessin est aussi bon que le scénario. J'attends la suite avec impatience.
