About the Author
Gill Sims is the author and illustrator of the hugely successful parenting blog and Facebook site ‘Peter and Jane’. She lives in Scotland with her husband, two children and a recalcitrant rescue Border Terrier, who rules the house.
Gill’s interests include drinking wine, wasting time on social media, trying and failing to recapture her lost youth and looking for the dog when he decides to go on one of his regular jaunts.

The only draw back to this book is that if you read it in public you are in danger of looking like a nutter and embarrassing your precious moppet as you snort attractively with uncontrollable laughter.
Any chance you could hurry up with "Why mummy swears"?
It does end lightly and wonderfully, which is what you’d want and expect from any book that was aimed at uplifting mothers in much need of support and inspiration. Yet there were enough twists and turns in the book that I was gripped and page-turning with alternate happy and nervous fervour from beginning to end.
I’m in high spirits now I’ve finished the book and highly impressed too with Gill Sim’s elegant weaving of fact with fiction to such great comic effect. She’s simply a master at writing for Mummy’s, even though I can’t promote either the swearing or drinking!
It makes me feel so much better about myself having read this book and charmed that someone can so completely understand what I’m going through and yet be simultaneously worse at handling some situations, whilst leaving me hope of the dream coming beautifully true!
I had to deduct one star for the swear words in parts (I had to google the acronyms!), even though by the time I was at the end I did feel it lended greatly to the humour once I’d got to know and love Ellen. If she hadn’t been such a “kindred spirit” (apart from all the swearing and booze) I’m not sure I would have felt quite the same. I suppose that says a lot about Gill Sim’s writing that she somehow made it seem somewhat passable even to someone like me...! In fact whilst writing this review, it even makes me reconsider the star omission because it is really a brilliantly funny read and it’s very clever how the book is so relatable to probably Mums across the board.
Really it’s worth reading this book no matter where you are on the socio-economic scale or what your parenting style. It will make you laugh out loud at the infinite number of impossible and at times unbearable difficulties and frustrations, that I now know are universally common amongst us all!
Whilst reading this book I could chuckle and giggle and laugh out loud at her unending challenges and counterproductive attempts to be the dream mummy and family she always fantasised about being, as well as suddenly see the humour in my own life and feel connected about the numerous things I never share with anyone else lest they fail to understand and instead look at me with even deeper amazement and judgement on their eyes.
Classic book! Should be gifted to all Mummies as soon as their children turn to toddlers!
