Product Description

Review

'While documentary photography is generally well understood, the diverse traditions of conceptual, semi-factual or entirely fictional art photography remain a mystery to many. Why Art Photography? is an accessible and intelligent guide, which addresses key themes like "authenticity" and "objectivity" by examining the thought-provoking work of living, often younger, artists.' Dr Sarah Thornton, author of Seven Days in the Art World

'The reader joins Soutter's class to gain access to the rarefied debates encountered at the cutting edge of contemporary art photography.' - The Art Newspaper

'Soutter has accomplished her mission: to those in the know and those who want to be, she has explained not just the whys but the how-tos of contemporary art photography.' - Source

Format: Paperback
Having read numerous books on conceptual photography I was keen to add Why Art Photography? to my collection. As soon as I started to read it I knew it would be a clear favourite of mine. Lucy Soutter provokes much thought on the topic of Art Photography with a fresh and concise style. She makes the reader ask questions as well as seeking answers and does so in a way that is not at all patronising to the reader. I really thought there was little more that could be written on this topic without it seeming repetitive but there is nothing old hat about this book - from start to finish it is crammed full of ideas, theories and analysis that will leave you feeling inspired and enthused. Buy it!

A wonderful book, clear, concise, entertaining and engaging. I love going to galleries but often feel frustrated with my lack of knowledge. Soutter helps you understand and encourages you to embrace new ideas. When I visited The Tate this week I had a whole different appreciation for the art. Soutter is a star. Looking forward to the next book!
