Also the rapadura sugar that is called for is unavalible everywhere i have looked. I tried my well stocked health shop and also one in a bigger town but they did not have it. Although the author gives an overview of substitutions at the beginning, it would be more helpful if in the actual recipes she said stuff like "if you cant find rapadura, use molasses or brown sugar" etc. I have had to do a bit of guess work and trial and error.
Bad stuff aside, the recipes (only made one so far) are very tasty and wholesome sounding and i like the photos and type face. Author seems to know her stuff.
Luckily I glanced through the book before I wrapped it and yes, it contains sensational recipes, is beautifully laid out and stunningly photographed but for a novice, it's a tad too lengthy. Not complicated, I would stress - it's just that a lot of the recipes are two pages long and for my friend's limited ability (and short attention span!), I knew it would sit on her kitchen counter unread and what's the use of that, so I returned it.
However, for the more competent baker or someone who has a little more time to spare, it's a wonderful baking book with recipes you don't see everyday (always a clincher for me) which are sure to impress everyone on the receiving end of your goodies.
I would have kept it myself but I already have a lot of the recipes in my vast collection of baking books, you see.
Go buy this book - you'll be glad you did. Well done, Jude.

A note on special diets: Jude gives detailed information on when and how each recipe can be tweaked to accommodate dairy free, egg free, gluten free, nut free and grain free options. However, this is no so-called paleo cookbook. Jude believes the ingredients which have supported people for generations, unrefined and whole grains, fats and sweeteners, are worthy of inclusion in a healthy diet. They bring, above all, deliciousness. I'm with Jude.
