I love all Mark Rashid's books and this is the best one yet. Written in his usual highly readable style, it's packed with insights about horse behaviour. You won't find any 'how to' exercises here but you will find the inspiration to help you build a stronger relationship between yourself and your horse.

Again another really good book from Mark Rashid - his style of writing and the way he uses anecdotes and his own stories to get across the message he is trying to pass on makes his books a pleasure to read and suddenly at the end you realise how much information and knowledge about horses you just taken in. If you want to learn how to communicate with your horse and how to listen to them to communicate back, then you definitely need to read this book - no gadgets or gizmos, just good common sense and understanding.

The first time I saw Mark working with horses, I knew immediately that was the way I wanted to work with my horses too. I have watched him work quite a bit over the years, and learnt so much from him.
This book really captures what he is all about. Great stories, told really well, but most of all, a great reminder to me, of what 'good horsemanship' is all about.

I am probably a little biased because I know Mark and have been to 3 of his horsemanship clinics - he changed my life and my relationship with my horse! This book has the essense of what Mark is about, it is amusing, touching and informative. It is filled with anecdotes written with Marks gentle, self-deprecating humour. Lovely book, great illustrations - try it!

Having read two other books by Mark I hoped this would be as deeply satisfying, and I wasn't disappointed. Instead of looking to solve problems by using training excercises as such, changes of equipment or improving riding techniques, Mark seeks to find the root of the matter. By using an open mind and listening to the horse, by Changing an attitude, letting the horse go be a horse, being what a horse needs and simple observations. Instead of a long road of problems we can see the dawning of new understanding and a way of being. Mark has 'put his finger' on the 'whole heart' concept. I have brought up a young horse who has challenged most of my ideas about training, I didn't want a horse who blindly obeyed me, I sought a partner who wanted to be with me with his heart. We are work in progress but at last someone has put into words the kind of relationship I want with a horse. This Guy makes Monty Roberts seem, whilst hugely talented, a little mechanical in his methods. Love horses? Read this book!

Mark Rashid's books are wonderful and heartwarming. They are storytelling in a fireside, mug of hot cocoa, throw another log of wood on the embers type of stories. I have to admit I am a huge fan of his after only reading 2 of his books.

I have read most of Mark Rashid's books and I think I would rank this as my favourite. Still the usual story telling but if you are not moved by the Whole Heart Whole horse story, maybe you have never really loved a horse whole heartedly. It doesn't happen everyday it's special and is captured eloquently in this book. Highly recommended.

This book did have some practical advice up to about chapter 5 then it really is just interesting stories about the authors work with different horses. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for practical advice. It's difficult to explain a feeling you have with horses I suppose, but the author has had the advantage of an excellent teacher and years of experience, and he has written down some of his experiences here in this book.
