The Who hit 50 so it's time for yet another Who compilation i have lost count of how many there have been released but i have got at least 3 including this one. What sets this one apart from the others is that it is a double CD so it can contain a wider variety of songs from the career of the band this for example contains tracks that don't normally make previous collections such as 'The Seeker', 'The Last Time' and 'Dogs' it also has a new track 'Be Lucky' and of course it has all the usual suspects 'My Generation', 'Pinball Wizard' and 'Who Are You' etc. My one gripe about the CD is the mix which seems to render the songs a bit flat sounding, however for a new comer to the band this is a good reasonably priced place to start for the more committed fan the box set 'Thirty Years of Maximum R&B' is the best one stop overview of the band.

The Who hits 50 with a bang, not a whimper. This is an essential addition to your collection and the superb artwork is worth the price alone. As many hits as you could think of, although I would have liked a little more from Quadrophenia (where is I've Had Enough' or 'Bellboy' ?) . I'd also definitely recommend the 2 disc version if your budget stretches that far.

More like 5 star ++++++. A must have on stunning Vinyl but why have the WHO not included the amazing, The OX. The is one of the best instrumentals ever, with the Great "Mr Moon" . A great opportunity missed. Still, some stunning music remastered and a MUST HAVE!!!!.

If you want a comprehensive overview of the band's career, it's all here, great song after great song. Yes there are many Who compilations and this one is almost the same as 'The Ultimate Collection' but there's a couple of rarities to tempt you part with your cash. Unless you live in a vacuum, you'll know the sheer quality of these wonderful songs and by rights it should have received 5 stars, but my gripe is with the packaging. Firstly, maybe I'm off the mark here but the title strongly suggests to me that there would be 50 tracks and surely that could have been done, I'd be happy to suggest an additional 8 worthy tunes. Also the cover is awful, a horrible pop art pastiche that omits their classic logo, it would've been very cool to have had the iconic Townsend in profile with Rickenbacker shot, even a standard band shot would be a huge improvement.
If you don't own a Who compilation then this is the obvious one to choose, but if you do, I'm afraid there is too little extra to justify this purchase. I suppose the marketing men believe our attention span is so short that they can keep selling the same product in repackaged form. So the Who hit 50, wonder what next year's angle will be?

Who-tastic! I love this album and highly recommend it. Over 40 tracks from this iconic band to listen to and enjoy.
A great compilation on two discs covering most of their work although there are a few tracks not included that perhaps should have been but that is the way of compilations; there is never enough room for everything.

I came to this compilation as someone who was aware of The Who and having appreciated a significant number of the singles contained in this collection, yet having never taken the plunge of owning anything by the group previously. This 50th anniversary compilation fit the bill as compilations I was aware of before seemed to always have omissions of some of the tracks I wanted. It was seeing this in my local Asda at just a fiver that finally sealed the deal. The good thing here is you get all the big singles backed up by famous album tracks, a few rarities, plus a complete scan through every stage of The Who's entire career. That obviously means the selection won't please everyone, and maybe a limited edition three disc version would have addressed those issues. However as a leaping off point for casual admirers of The Who or as an introduction leading to further, deeper investigation of the back catalogue this is just the place to start. Sure, there's The Ultimate Collection to consider as an alternative. This stops at 2002, features full length (as opposed to single edit) versions of some tracks and makes a few different selections. For me as a casual fan Hits 50 shaded it, doing a similar job as The Rolling Stones Grrrr! in introducing me to a cherry-picked selection and thus helping with further, future investigation of the extensive back catalogue. It's great to have Pictures Of Lily, Substitute, 5.15, Who Are You, Boris The Spider, Baba O'Riley and Squeezebox all in one place. Certainly this is as fine an introduction to a great band as currently exists.

I assume PT and RD have no control over these compilations??
I would recommend The Ultimate Collection in lieu of Hits 50 - if even for the packaging. The Ultimate Collection lists all songs on an individual basis and provided a full "history" to each track. Plus, it contains some fantastic photographs.
Notwithstanding the above, when are we going to have "Waspman" included on a cd - the original B side of Relay.
Note that I do love The Who and am looking forward to seeing them in Cardiff in Dec.
Note I have provided 5 stars for the content only - it would be unfair to mark all these great songs with a lower marking but note my comments above regarding compilations of The Who songs.
Happy listening
